Minneapolis Skyline In Green, on the Mississippi River, Minneapolis, Minnesota, March 2012, photos © 2012 by Liz Schultz. All rights reserved.
Happy St. Patrick’s Day. I am not one to go out on the town and tackle a green beer, but I do celebrate my roots by remembering my Irish ancestors. Standing on the porch of their 1876 home in Augusta are my great great grandparents, the Murpheys. It gives me chills to look at that photograph.
Miles away from Georgia, it is March 2012. Even though it was pushing 80 degrees yesterday, when the cool evening breeze rolled in, I sat on the couch and watched a movie. Liz zoomed to Roseville to take a photo class on Night Photography, a way to become more familiar with her Sony NEX-5N. When the movie was over, I fell asleep. And she came home with this photograph of the Minneapolis skyline in green.
There are no special effects. She perched her tripod on the Broadway bridge, set the camera on manual, and worked with a custom white balance. The camera’s brain honed in on a spot in the middle of the Mississippi and set the whole scene’s white balance by river deep Spring waters. Minneapolis saw green; I saw the luck of the Irish.

Thanks, yb. Great to hear from you. Had a relaxing St. Patrick’s Day. It’s Summer in March! Liz is learning about her relatively new Sony camera and has taken two photo classes this week. One on Night Photography and the other on the Sony. She learned a ton and came home and shared it with me. We are both trying to work more with manual settings on the digital work. I can transfer some of what I learned from film photography to digital, but not all. Happy Spring to New Mexico!

I just shared this image with my co-worker. She grew up in Minneaplolis and was impressed with the green glow. I can’t believe that was done without special effects, incredible! It reminds me that there are so many ways of seeing things in life, if we just get a good angle.

Thank you for the link sandrarenee. I am catching up on red Ravine this weekend. I so appreciate that you are inspired by what you find here. Means a lot to me.
Teresa, when I hear that Minnesotans have moved away, I always wonder if they miss being here. So many Minnesotans I know have moved away and come back to the Twin Cities. I’m a transplant but have now lived here long enough to qualify for state citizenship! I’m not sure I will be moving again.
I passed along to Liz what you said about her photo. She has gotten good feedback from the green Minneapolis skyline. Since she took this, she and I took a digital photography class together and I learned a little more about white balance, too. I like that the white balance on this shot was set by the Mississippi River.
I am trying to learn digital SLR now. A third class coming up in a few weeks. Then to try to process and use what I learn. Most of the photographs that are mine on red Ravine were taken with a Canon point and shoot or a camera phone after I moved into the Smart phone world. I tend to like to shoot on the fly and be spontaneous. But it’s fun to learn more about the SLR and work to be more deliberate. Thanks for stopping by. Hope you are well.
