Thank you for this opening to/of spring. Down here in New Mexico I find myself trying to catch the scent of a northern spring: chill-tinged wet earth; fall leaves, frozen in their initial decay, thawing to sweet mulch; the first scent of green, daffodil leaves, lilac buds, crocuses.
And a poem for you:

Robin, the walks are peaceful. I am grateful for the parks near us. Hope your Spring is going well in the bogs!
sandrarenee, good description of a thawing spring. And thank you for the poem! Your New Mexico spring sounds more enticing than what we have going on in Minnesota. It’s strangely hot. There was really no thawing period with all the smells you describe. It seemed like it went right from Winter to Summer. It’s humid, we have all the windows open, and the fans are blowing.
One of my local Twitter friends mentioned that this early thaw is not good for the maple syrup business. The sap in the trees needs the cool temps to run properly for the collection. I don’t know exactly how it works, but she’s very concerned. It reminds me that there is a downside to hot temps so early in the season. We have yet to see the impact on the land, the farmers, those whose livelihoods depend on the seasons. I do believe this is partly due to global warming. I have another friend that lives in Alaska and the snow just never stopped falling this year. Sure makes you wonder what’s going on!
