QM, A great photo; but I’m wondering, from your haiku, if you have a fear of being “up in the air” in a ferris wheel. I’m ok with them, but very fearful of roller coasters! When I was about 5 yrs. old, I insisted on going on the big, old wooden one at the end of the Santa Monica pier. I sat in between my big brother and my Dad. The cross bar was right in line with my upper lip.
The bar kept bumping my lip against my teeth until I was bleeding, as well as doing a LOT of crying! Every time we came to a curve or raced downwards, I was sure we would end up in the ocean where we would all be drowned! It was Father’s Day, and my Dad was wearing his brand new shirt. By the time we finally reached the ground, Dad’s shirt was stained with my blood, and I was traumatized for life!!

oliverowl, thank you! I’ve been a bit under the weather the last week and am just starting to feel better. I’m catching up here. About the photo, I took it when Liz and I were walking down the Midway on the very last night of the Fair. It had poured down rain, was dark, windy — a good time to take a few photos.
I had wanted to take photographs when I rode the double Ferris wheel with Teri. But I was holding on for dear life! There was no way I was going to hold my camera out and snap photos! So I settled for this one later on in the evening.
I am afraid of heights, the older I get. I used to do crazy height related things like rappelling when I was younger. I somehow managed to work past my fear. But these days I am less apt to chance it. The last time I tried was a firetower up in Itasca. Liz and I didn’t make it very far up the creaky wood, swaying in the breeze.
Your roller coaster ride sounds harrowing! My gosh, I never would have ridden again after that. Do you still do Ferris wheels? I do like the single Ferris wheel. It’s one of the few things I’ll ride anymore. Roller coasters don’t scare me as much as make me dizzy. I get motion sickness. So it’s hard for me to do the rides. Hope you wrote your roller coaster story down! Thanks for stopping by.

Teri, thanks. You were a maniac on that double Ferris wheel! And a brave one at that. I never would have done it without you. I’m glad I did though. I saw it as a symbol of bravery, just diving into the fear I had. It’s good practice for some changes I want to make in my life.
The good thing about rides is that I have a short memory. Next year, I’d probably brave it again with you. I hope Ruthie appreciated that I stepped in for her this year! And I was glad to hear that she gets scared, too. Because my knuckles were so pale when I got off. Not to mention, I was dizzy off and on for a few days. It’s that motion sickness thing.
Sure was good to scream my head off for about 10 minutes though. I’ll never forget the look on the face of the man when he let us off and I said, “That scared the hell out of me!” It was the first time I saw him smile the whole time we were there.

Quoin,
So, I’m glad you’re already considering (in a positive way) a DFW ride for 2011. It will save me all that pesky searching for a riding partner. And, Liz is officially off the hook. She’ll be happy to hear that.
Ye Old Mill again? Fitzgerald says we should.

Teri, yes, definitely Ye Old Mill next year. I think I have to make that an annual ritual now after riding it with you and Liz. It was so peaceful. And haunting, just knowing that it was around 100 years ago when F. Scott Fitzgerald rode it. I’ll try the double Ferris wheel again next year. By then, I’ll have forgotten how crazy I felt when I got off! Safe travels. I’ll be thinking of you every day.

I’m pumped for both rides!

QM,
I listened to Charlotte’s Web on the road today. When they take Wilbur to the county fair, there is much (much!) talk about riding the ferris wheel. One of the children fantasizes about getting stuck at the top. Of course, I don’t think it’s a double.

Teri, that sounds like a real treat! I haven’t read that book in ages. I used to love when the single Ferris wheel would stop on top and I could sit and look out over the land. If the double did that, it would probably scare the death out of me!
Hope your road trip to Kentucky is going well. BTW, I always thought you should write a children’s book. You have a way with kids. I hope you do that some day.

E.B. wrote Charlotte’s Web when he was 52 or 53. I find that to be good news.

Very good news. Especially on the days when I’m starting to feel older than my years. May Sarton also penned many, many books well into her 80’s. Time. It’s circular.
