Spring snow is beautiful in someone else’s corner of the world. Today, right on schedule, the first coltsfoot blossoms stuck their heads above the leaves along our road. I only saw a dozen, but the air was soft the breeze promising, and other buds swell. Hope springs anew.

You know, I’m ready for “spring, for real” (instead of “spring, my ass,” as I called it recently on a Facebook status update). I have to say that as much as I enjoyed Taos, there’s nothing like a warm spring day in that town. The smells, the colors, the crispness of air. It was kind of muddy, and I got the sense from talking to a few folks there that they’re ready for warmer weathers. It’s been a long and snowy winter up north.

Some things never change. Great to see the old wagon cart planter. I’ve always been drawn to it, at the top of the steps, under the old cottonwood. Glad you got to visit this weekend. I could picture you there.
I guess it’s one of the warmest months of March up in Ely, MN where Lily the black bear is nesting. She’s come out of the nest early. And you’ve got snow in your neck of the woods. It’s been a strange spring!

This is a little taste of the 4-Season Intensive. Did you see if there were any groups using the zendo?

I’m jut glad my mint is coming back after our cold winter. I love fresh mint!

QM, I had noticed that Lily the Mama Bear was out and about long before spring’s arrival. I hope that doesn’t negatively affect mama and baby. Do you know, is a mild winter good, bad, indifferent?
Teri, no, I didn’t see if there were any groups in the zendo. At breakfast on Sunday there were not a lot of people, and none seemed to know each other. Lots of food, though, and so yummy. That place is just magical in the way the house is and how you’re cared for. I just love it.

It’s not sandal weather in northern NM yet, Heather, although I couldn’t believe how warm it got in the central Rio Grande Valley today — 70 degrees. Downright hot!
Corina, funny you should mention mint. We also grow it, and a few weeks ago Jim was making lettuce rolls (he’s making them a bunch these days) and forgot to buy mint. Well, being optimistic, I told him that I’d just go out to our big patch area and pick some. OK, he said, if there’s any yet. Man, did I have to scratch under the leaves to find a few baby morsels. I came back with about 10 tiny leaves in my hand. It was pathetic. 😦
Mint is so hardy, though. I love that about it. Once those herbs take root, they seem to endure very cold winters.

That whole sock idea yb…just not me. It was 62 Sunday (fog) and the sun never broke over the beach. Most of us just wear hoodies with our sandals when it’s that cold. I drove 15 miles to a friend’s house and it was 82! We watched that show “Life” on Discovery. OMG! If you aren’t watching with your hubby and the girls, you should be. The paper said “you will find yourself watching with your mouth hanging open”. Half way through the first episode, I realized I was! QM, you and Liz would enjoy it too. http://dsc.discovery.com/tv/life/

I don’t have Discovery, darn it! We’re cable deprived.
Ha, just wear hoodies with your socks. Or extra nail polish on your toes for insulation. 8)

Oh, we’ve got more snow today in Wyoming, too! I wrote a haiku about that cart on my last trip to Mabel’s. I’ll add it here later if I can find which notebook I scribbled it in.
Thanks, yb, for the good photos and the memories.

More coldish weather here in central NM, too. Yesterday warm, today overcast and cold. Tis Spring.

ybonesy, it was 62 here today, blue and warm! I have such a case of Spring Fever. It may snow again but sure didn’t feel like it today. I guess it’s one of the warmest months of March on record. All that after a VERY cold and snowy Winter.
Heather, we were watching that Life Series with Oprah this week. I think Liz taped most of it. It really was amazing. I love the grebes and their courtship dance.
ybonesy, we’ve been watching Lily and Hope intensely the last week. They won’t be in the den much longer. They say the warm March may have brought Lily back from hibernation state a little sooner than usual. But, of course, having never taped this before, they can’t say for sure.

Heather, have you ever seen a program where Orca whales flip Great White sharks and put them into that catatonic state that eventually drowns the shark? I recall reading on Gunnar’s blog (he didn’t comment on this post but has on others) a debate about whether the Orca is unconscionable or not for doing this to the shark. It’s all part of the cycles of life and the way nature operates, I figure.
Hey QM, sounds like you guys are having a nice spring-like week this week in MN. Yesterday we had rain, snow, then sunshine all in the same day. Spring. 8)

Wow, no I haven’t yb. Sounds pretty cool. I love all that kinda stuff. I especially love those programs with sunken ships and the cool stuff they find. When they first found the Titanic, you couldn’t drag me from the tele. I think one of the coolest things I’ve seen on TV (besides my beloved Harold and Maude) was one called “Tribute to Tuna” where they showed what the old Tuna fishermen used to have to deal with just to catch those big fish. I think QM would love it. I know it’s on DVD. Tandem cane pole fishing with out any reels. Amazing stuff.
