Summer ended with a splash Tuesday afternoon in this part of the Rio Grande Valley. A clap of thunder, and then boom, pouring down rain. For 24 hours the clouds socked us in. We went from thin sock (or no sock) season to thick socks, and for a day we yearned for the amber glow of a fire in the fireplace.
Of course, summer officially ended a month ago, but just this weekend we sat in bleachers with the bright sun on our faces. I have a tan from three hours watching a tennis tournament, and for the past week I’ve worn short sleeves and sweated through 80-degree afternoons.
Yesterday I felt moody, an emotional achiness. I wanted to drink hot tea all day and curl up on a couch with a good book or a movie, a stew bubbling on the stove. It’s hard to believe that just a few days ago we were frolicking in what we thought was fall, not knowing all along they were the dogs days of summer.
By evening the rain had thinned to the point where I only need the intermittent wipers on the windshield. The sun tried burning through the clouds. Last night the temperature dipped to the high 30s. This morning is cold.
Time to bring in the geraniums.
As a proud owner of a pug, this warmed my heart . . .

We’re taking Sony to the Pugtoberfest, I think, on Saturday. I say “I think” because there is SOO much going on, including checking in on my mom, who will be recouping from an outpatient surgery. But I hope to get Sony and my daughters over to the event.
And Brian, I have come to love little Sony. I joke still about pug musk (such a strange smell) and all her weird sounds, and there’s that face, and her weird little body, but she’s a doll. I think she’s an especially cute pug, but maybe that’s a mother’s subjectivity. 8)
Heather, she nearly fogged up my camera, she was panting so hard after a game of “try to catch Sony in the grass.”

Very sweet pug pics, there. 🙂
Our summer ended quite rudely with the arrival of a typhoon, which doesn’t often happen in Northern California. Our more typical, beloved autumn is here now…no crappy 100 degree plus days, just cool crisp nights, and days in the 70s and low 80s. Hard to be grumpy on days like that, huh?

I love your miniature hairy dragon, Sony. She is a most happy-looking little entity. Pugs are wonderful in nature, so affectionate and so pleased with attention and play – they are definitely dogs to increase our ability to revel in pleasure.
A neighbour lady of ours has a male pug, Sonny. He is such a mischievous little dog and so much fun to meet on the street, for whenever one greets him he wriggles in total delight and his corkscrew tail gyrates in the oddest fashion.
We here are in the throes of the onset of our horrendous rainy season. Water just buckets down. Jessica is extremely insulted in being pushed off the stoop to go do her business in the rain. Such a princess!. G

yb, I think Sony would make an excellent pumpkin for Halloween with that nice, big, round head. Is there a costume for her…or maybe just face painting? The Mavis has a jester costume but will only tolerate the colorful collar. She thinks the pointed hat is beneath her…
You know how cats are… 😉

I’ve fallen in love with Sony! Sooo cute! Good luck with a costume. Some dogs love them & others not so much. (aka Abbey)
As you know, we’ve just adopted a new pet, not by choice, but she has settled into her new home. A beautiful calico kitty named Willow. Someone abandoned her, but she’s looking healthy now. No more fleas, ticks, or burrs.
My niece breeds pugs & they will be ready just in time for the holidays. Those pugs are pretty popular dogs!
Great photos, yb! D

Bring that adorably Sony dog and join us in southwest Pennsylvania to rake leaves. That’s the way to get the full fall experience. We live in a hardwood forest with oaks, maple, butternut, ironwood, and lots of other kinds, and won’t be done with this for nearly another month. It has frozen here, but not hard. The autumn sun striking huge trees covered with pure gold is just about the most energizing sight on the planet.

Your hardwood forest fall sounds so inviting. One thing I must do in my lifetime is see fall in the northeast. Thanks for sharing, Sharon. Your words gave me a glimpse until I can see it for myself.
Diddy and Heather, Sony is, we are finding out, costume averse. No way, Jose. I didn’t try face paint, Heather, but that’s a good idea. We tried dressing her in bloomers, and they were adorable for the 30 seconds she had them on. 8)
G, your descriptions of the pug, aka miniature hairy dragon (I love that!) are right on. You could have been describing exactly Sony when describing your neighbor’s male pug. And two pugs together are so almost too much energy. At least for me.
Diddy, pugs are pretty popular. And pug people seem much more connected to one another than, say, lab people. Or mutt people. 8) But maybe I just haven’t been attuned to other types of dog people and their forums and fests.
Jules, I’d love to spend time in northern California in autumn. It seems whenever I’m there, it’s either late spring or winter, and winter is pretty cold. I think autumn is just a great season in almost any state or geo. It’s the perfect season.
Our fall has settled in. No more 80 degree days. All this weekend we were in the mid-60s, and by this Wed we’re getting rain and possibly snow. Brrr…

yb, such a great photo of Sony. What a cute dog. There were two dogs at the family gathering yesterday. Really fun to have them there. I’m more of a cat person. But I’ve definitely come to love dogs more the more I am around them.
It’s been really fun to see Fall in Georgia and Pennsylvania this year. I was surprised to see that Georgia was sometimes cooler at night than PA or MN. The temps seem to hold steady until winter when Minnesota takes the cold weather lead. Fall is beautiful in the Northeast. And I noticed in Virginia it was stunning. Minnesota is beautiful, too. I love Fall and Winter. Looking forward to snow — after I get back home!

yb, has it snowed yet? I think of your yard covered with snow and Sony running through it. The weather here has been cold and gray in the afternoons, but sunny in the mornings. Good to be home.
QM, thought of you while on my travels. Sounds as though you had adventures of the best kind. Safe journey home.

It rained last night, Bob, and this morning, but it’s snowing in the Sandias and likely in Taos and Santa Fe. The skiers are so excited. Maybe the ski resorts will open by Thanksgiving.
Sony’s a fair weather dog, although she did some bounding in the fields (more like bouncing) last year when we had snow. The big boys love the snow; heck, they love any kind of weather, although they’re sleeping in the house this winter. They’re ten years old and need to be indoors more often than before.
Bob, I’m glad you got off the beaten path this recent trip to NM. So much to see. I’d love to see your state, as well. Sounds pretty lush, with the river. I still wonder if your river valley looks anything like ours.
QM, sounds like everyone in your family is an animal lover. Was your mom an animal lover, too? I’ve been keeping up with diddy’s experience with the new cat, Willow. I think that’s her name.
