It takes two.
If envy were to rear her head she would be a duo. Because, in order for envy to exist there has to be the envied and the one who envies.
Envy may be a painful recognition of not having what someone else has. Jealousy on the other hand is envy with venom. Jealousy is the sister of spite. The irony of jealousy is it may bite its nose off to spite its face.

When I look at Tricia’s drawing I am reminded that envy is a side of my self that I’m not proud of. At the root of envy is selfishness. Envy is self destructive in that it turns a blind eye to what one does have (note the one eyed girl in the drawing) and causes pain to one’s self (both girls look pretty miserable in this drawing). Envy in a sense is self-hatred, dismissing the gifts, talents, possesions, life that one does have. Envy is an absence of kindness and love, both for others and for self. Envy involved an object of envy, but it is most often our own selves who feel the pain of our envy.

That was similar to what I was coming in to say, Maripat. That when I first saw the drawing, I saw that split that occurs when I envy. The one that splits off my psyche and does something I wish it wouldn’t, and yet we’re all the same person, there are not two bodies.
And I’m glad, Tricia, to read your comment, because that helps me understand your context for the drawing. But isn’t it funny how when we look at art, we give it our own context?
Your drawings are wonderful. So whimisical and fantastical. I’m curious about what you might have to share regarding your style, your influences, that kind of thing. If you get a chance and are so inclined, I’d love to hear more.

What I love about this piece is that the two characters are basically identical, yet they’re still looking at one another enviously. It brings up the question, do we envy other people simply because they have something we don’t… or is there something inherent in their “otherness” that triggers it as well??
This drawing really brings that twisted element of ENVY to the surface.
Well done!

WHen we envy someone we step inside our second self and unless we acknowledge it and look at why we feel those feelings, we remain tied to that part of ourself.

Maripat, what a wonderful interpretation. It does give a double-take of one’s self if one is envious.
For me, I was thinking of identical twins or even fraternal twins that oftentimes envy each other. Both are miserable, because one twin may want to help the other twin with a special ability, but the other twin may refuse the help or just get frustrated because the other twin is too talented. I see this in many twins.
I love the simplicity and complexity of this artwork, Patricia. 🙂

I went immediately to that documentary about the conjoined twins and how they dealt with learning to drive etc. They seemed to get along pretty well, but one twin cannot straighten her neck due to the way they are joined and I do wonder if she ever envies her sister the different perspective on the world.

i love this drawing, the thing that stands out to me the most is the way that the two are so similar, yet so envious of each other… i want what you have,… but i may have something just as good of my own that i’m overlooking due to having been consumed by the envy.
very beautiful & poignant, thanks for sharing tricia! ❤

Thought Maripat’s comments described the situation in the drawing perfectly. The envious part of the young woman with only one eye, the unseen (blind) eye, the turning away but connected. Good interpretation of a beautiful and thoughtful drawing. Will certainly check out Patricia’s work.

Thanks so much envy staff and people who commented. I was a little anxious because of the only person with an illustration here, but I am really delighted by the thoughtful interpretations, this whole envy experience has been great fun and I am thrilled for Honorable mention.
ybonesy all of my artwork begins with the figure and some aspect of the human condition. I have always always only been interested in expressing the human being. Beyond that I’m usually not satisfied unless there is a bit of an edge, some little bite. For me, art is not only the basic principles of design: color, shape, form, composition, line…its an expression of something that more than meets the eye.
Thanks for asking and the interest. 😀 and again, many thanks to all who commented.

What I see in this piece is the idea that we are all essentially the same, and yet, we sometimes envy what we see in others, concentrating on the differences between us, instead.

Thanks for elaborating, Tricia. Loved hearing your philosophy about art and your focus on the human condition.
I also enjoyed looking around on your website. Looks like you and your fellow artist friends have a great time on Halloween. How fun! Have you noticed how artists often embrace that holiday. It’s probably my favorite. (I also like Thanksgiving.)

Love all the comments… and am fascinated by the fact that, in this case at least, visual art seems to invite a wider-ranging discussion than the written word.

I have been a big fan of Tricia’s artwork from the first time I saw her work. Always very deep and thought provoking. Many of her works allow me a peek at my own dark side. Eyes are the windows to the soul and I believe Tricia is the Queen of Eyes.
My eyes are always eager to see her next creation : )
