I planned to be outside right now working in the garden, but it’s raining too hard. And wouldn’t you know, tomorrow’s our Fourth of July bash. The fridge is full of brats, hamburger, chicken, and loads of veggies to grill.
I should have known it would be raining the day before the party. It rained leading to and on the day of our Easter gathering, the tapas to-do, and my oldest daughter’s end-of-school gala. Either our party planning acts as a sort of rain dance, or north-central New Mexico is getting a lot of rain this year.
No matter. Come rain or shine, the party will go one. Hopefully the Fourth of July parade won’t be rained out (it’s my favorite of all several parades our Village holds). But if it is, that’s OK. We love the rain!
What about you? What will you be doing this Fourth of July?
Whatever it is…
Have a safe and colorful Fourth!
HAPPY 4TH to all
ok yb, I think you may remember I’m a 3 year old in the kitchen… but the grilling of veggies got me to sit up straight and take notice (not easily done at the moment) 😉
What vegetables do you grill and how? Do you stick them on foil or put them right on the racks with those stick thingies? (no bell yuck peppers please). I have only tried asparagus and onions… and they fall through the holes!

Happy 4th! 🙂
We’ve had some rain today, too. I spotted a bit of blue up there, hiding between the clouds. It’s the first time in about 4 days I’ve seen blue. If the sun comes out, we’ll all feel blinded by the light.
Have a great party, YB.

I’ll be heading to the Lake Wobegon Trail; it is the 35th anniversary of Prairie Home Companion! Garrison Keillor is broadcasting the show in Avon, Minnesota–close to the fictional town of Lake Wobegon. My niece Ruth and I are heading up from Minneapolis early (to secure good spots on the ground with our blankets).
I’ve seen Prairie Home Companion many times at the Fitzgerald Theater and the Minnesota State Fair. This will be even better, in the heart of the country.

Happy, July 4th, All. We elected to stay home this weekend and lay low. Worked in the yard yesterday, had a fire, watched a few movies last night. We were thinking of going up to Avon with Teri, but decided we’d better get some things done around the house. (Teri, you and Ruth have fun! We hope for a full report later!)
Happy 4th Robin and Heather! ybonesy, hope it doesn’t rain on your family gathering. It’s been cloudy here the last few days but no rain yet. Today, it’s 71 but really humid. I was hoping for one of those sunny, windy, perfectly humidless days like last Sunday. Boy, was it nice out. Nature has other plans.
Have a good Holiday to those who celebrate. We might head out to see fireworks tonight at a local park. Doesn’t happen until 10pm.

yb, I also hope the rain held off for your cookout. We did a lot of much needed relaxing today. Now looking forward to the rest of July! Hope you enjoyed your day! D

Ruth and I went to Avon, along with thousands and thousands of people. Avon has a population of 1,261…I don’t know how they managed all of us.
It was a sensational 4th of July Prairie Home Companion program; my favorite was hearing two WW II vets from the area tell their stories of war and returning home to Minnesota to farm. It brought tears to my eyes, and standing ovations from the crowd.
A wonderful day.

I hope you had a great day, yb!
We came off Drayton Island by boat (ferry was not running) to get the vehicle on the mainland so we could drive back to Fleming Island (which has bridges..thank goodness) to watch the fire works from the dock here. It was a perfect night..a gentle breeze on the river and fireworks up and down the river near and far. The moon was at her best…she added to the magic in her own way!
The only ones that did not enjoy the evening were Ringo and Amber (our dog gurus) they do not like the sound of the fireworks! 😮

So did it rain?
We quite missed celebrating the 4th, went to a wedding in Illinois. But, unexpectedly, I was delighted by fireworks. We had a 3 hour drive home after the dinner, we left at dusk, and I think I saw parts of firework shows from at least three dozen hamlets and towns. They were all having big celebrations.

It did rain, but only for about 20 minutes or so, maybe 30, and then a gorgeous double rainbow.
Kind of like chasing tornadoes, Bo, except you were chasing fireworks shows, it seems. 8)
Hey, sounds like there were some fabulous 4ths out there. For a while I used to dislike 4th of July, especially after liking it so much as a kid. Another one of those holidays that didn’t seem to live up to my expectations once I got to be an adult. So it was great to throw a party and have fun again. We might make it a tradition.

BTW, diddy, the rain hit after we were done with the grill and eating. Perfect timing.

We took it easy on the 4th. Thought of going to a parade, but didn’t get our asses in gear early enough. Thought of going to see fireworks, but lingered too long over dessert. I guess we’re lazy. It was nice, though. Sunny and not too hot. BBQ and all.
Glad your rain held off and you enjoyed. 🙂

Aw, the rainclouds love you- like that character from one of the Douglas Adams Hitchhiker series. Remember the trucker who was an (unknowing) minor deity, a rain-god?
Your feast sounded tasty. Our 4th was a comedy of errors that culminated in watching fireworks from the wrong side of a dense, impenetrable fog. The big blank sky did change colors, which was interesting, but not as interesting as looking around at all the people staring at where the fireworks would be if you could see them.
My grandma said what everyone was probably thinking. ‘Well, that was 20,000 dollars worth of weird.”

Thanks for stopping by for July 4th wishes Suz, Jules, amuirin, Bo, Teri, diddy, Robin, Heather. Liz and I ended up going to see fireworks at a local park. It was a fun and relaxing weekend after all we were going through with Chaco the week before. Things are getting a little better with that process. Grief takes many forms.
Teri, we thought of you in Avon at A Prairie Home Companion. Liz and I actually listened to it at the studio that day and heard the WW II vets talk about their lives. It was very touching. It really makes you think when people share in that way, in person, with huge amounts of people.
I was talking to Liz and ybonesy about collective grief. Collective support, happiness, celebration all kinds of collective communities abound. When you think about it, about death and what becomes of our lives which are only a spec in time, no one will remember who we are after enough time passes.
I was talking to Liz about that after Chaco and Michael Jackson and Farrah. Liz and I and Mom were wandering around graveyards with graves that dated back to the 1600’s in Darien, Georgia last year. Most of those people — I bet no one remembers who they are.
I guess that makes a good case for living the best life we can live right now. In this one moment.

Our city had a music fest all weekend so we headed down to the river to see who was playing. Caught an interesting country/blues band called Bobby Robert (reminds me of my Tennessee uncle BobbyJo who married BettyJo) his band was pretty good but we wanted to see the other groups too. Saw another singer and her band who capitvated us for about 20 minutes before we headed downstream to checkout the crafts and other groups.
It was funny that we ran into several of my daughter’s friends whom we stopped to chat with and one of my son’s friends but none of our own friends. Ended the day grilling (third day in a row) chicken on a stick and veggies (sorry anuvuestudio but we did green yuck peppers), watching some movies and hanging with the kids. No fireworks on the 4th but we spent the day with some old high school friends who had a fireworks show that night. All in all one of the better 4th of July weekends in some time.

R3, that sounds like a great July 4th weekend. Interesting reference to Betty Jo and Bobby Jo, totally Southern names, aren’t they. I haven’t heard of the band Bobby Robert. Are they in your local area?
I can’t believe the 4th is over and we are now well into Summer. It doesn’t seem like it’s been as hot as usual here in Minnesota. Pretty dry but still green. Of course, Fall is my favorite time of year. But this year I’ve been happy to have the light of Summer. I’ve needed the sunshine. 8)

Oh, the music festival is so cool. J & I never made it there. Brant has kept us going & going & going. Today I made Mom’s chicken & dumplings. Mmm.
We’re gearing up for a big week-end in WPA. Brant is more excited than we are. My brother D has a pool & his parties are the best in town. Hope everyone is doing well. We have all kinds of veggies coming on strong. Lots of work ahead of us! D
