Postscript: For those of you in Albuquerque, you can get Entenmann’s Donuts in chocolate, powdered sugar, or glazed at Keller’s Farm Stores.

Oh, ybonesy, I love this. Welcome back! We just finished off a box of Mickey’s Old Fashioned Donuts this morning. They were the cake donuts with a glaze, then stripes of chocolate frosting. I love donuts but they aren’t that great for the waistline or the heart!
We have Entenmann’s Donuts here, too. Are they made in New Mexico? I have no clue. These Mickey’s are out of Illinois. A few of the Krispy Kreme places have closed here. Not sure why. But they are some of my favorites, especially when still warm. 8)

Entenmann’s was started by a German baker who had emigrated to New York. The first store was in Brooklyn, NY, then moved to Long Island. I think their bakery is still in Long Island.
Here’s a link about the history of Entenmann’s [LINK]. The business was started in the late 1800s.

Oh, meant to say QM that most if not all of the Krispy Kreme stores in Albuquerque closed. We used to have one very close to our house, and I liked to take the girls there once in a while. I remember how everyone was saying that if you had been smart enough to buy stock in Krispy Kreme when it first went public, that you’d be rich. Then the stock plummeted and the business got in trouble. I don’t know—maybe it’s the health factor. They really are horrible for you.
After I ate the Entenmann’s donut (I only ate one from a box of a dozen) I felt kind of sick. Like, yuck, what *is* that frosting made of?? 8) And Jim can’t believe that I’d ever buy a box. It’s nostalgia.

yb, while growing up, my dear friend Kathy used to travel back to Long Island to visit relatives. I think my first introduction to these donuts (when a box actually made it back on the plane) was at 12. Every year Kathy would travel and bring them back. I LOVE them. I could eat the whole box. I think I have before!
I was kinda sad when Entenmann’s spread to the West. They became just slightly less special to me…though I would still eat one if it was near me 😉 I find the weird chocolatety coating fascinating!

I’m also fascinated by the chocolate coating. When I was buying the box, I struck up a conversation with someone in the line. We were talking about all the weird ingredients listed on the box—lots of different gums. He said he wouldn’t be surprised if one of the ingredients was formaldehyde. That cracked me up. 8)
I used to eat these donuts as a kid. If I’m remembering correctly, I think these are the donuts we got at 5 in the morning in 5th grade as we were preparing to leave to Carlsbad Caverns on a field trip. This brand of donuts and McIlhaney’s Dairy milk.
When I saw the Entenmann’s Donuts at Keller’s (where I go to buy meats) I just couldn’t help but pick up a box. I think this is the third box I’ve brought home since I saw them a few months ago.

yb, well I thought Entemann’s was only sold in the Northeast. I haven’t purchased any in year’s, though I do like their Cheese Danish. The chocolate coating on the doughnuts is too srange for me. The coating is too waxy.
Do you celebrate Fat Tuesday? It is the 24th & in PA, stores, churches, & other groups sell Fasnaughts. I’ll be out buying some tomorrow. I always look forward to them! Yum! I wonder if QM remembers them? D

Waxy…a good description for the chocolate-coated donuts, diddy.
No, I don’t celebrate Fat Tuesday. I guess the only celebrations I know of involve getting drunk at bars. I’d be interested to know more about your celebrations of Fat Tuesday. What are Fasnaughts??

yb. Fasnaughts are donuts, the origin I believe is German. It is very big here in Dutch country. The idea is to use up all your fat & lard in preparation for Ash Wednesday. At least that is my memory of it. My family always made donuts this time of year. I never mastered the skill, however, I still look forward to buying them.
I know that Mardi Gras also was named for Fat Tuesday, though I never recall celebrating it with drinking. I have a bottle of wine & perhaps I will dunk my fasnaughts in a glass. On second thought, I think I will stick with the donut & a glass of milk!
I prefer them glazed. D

ybonesy, the above link is from our local newspaper & explains fasnachts ( I was off on the spelling). It’s a pretty big deal in PA. Most of the time you must pre-order to be assured of getting any, but I plan on getting mine today, so I don’t think it will be an issue. D

Yum, they look and sound a bit like Krispy Kreme donuts—crispy on the outside, fluffy in the middle. 8)
I do think they’d be yummy dipped in milk. Or, taken with a big mug of cafe con leche.
Thanks for the link, diddy. Enjoy!!

Entenmann’s donuts are one of my favorite guilty pleasures.
At our house we particularly love the devil’s food donuts with the latex chocolate frosting, which doesn’t seem to show up in our Safeway any more. 😦
I agree with previous commenters that they have a certain waxy deliciousness. A little taste of New Jersey.

You have Safeways where you live?? I love Safeway. That’s the store I grew up on. And Piggly Wiggly.
It is latex. I think that must be the secret ingredient. Just a hint. 8)

yb, I just got back from the store with my fasnachts. They were on display as soon as I walked through the door. But, guess what was on display directly behind them? More Entenmann’s products that I have ever seen at one time! I had to chuckle at the coincidence! But, I opted for the mixed bag of fasnachts. It’s tradition. D

LOL. Maybe the store display person is thinking that while donuts are on the minds of the consumers, might as well push the Entenmann’s products. 8)
Are the fasnachts made by the store bakery? Or are they provided by a different bakery?

yb, they are made by the store bakery. But, I seriously considered a box of Entenmann’s also, however one can only do so much on Fat Tuesday! I opted for the the square ones, which has been my family tradition. Tomorrow morning will be hazlenut flavored coffee & a few fasnachts. D

BTW, re-reading comments in this post, I should report that the old Krispy Kreme in Albuquerque near our house re-opened earlier this year. Business is brisk. I’ve gone there a half dozen times already, the latest being this weekend. I rarely eat the donuts, and I probably shouldn’t let the girls eat the donuts, but I do sometimes cave in when they ask for them.

Too bad I missed this conversation. When doing family history research I found, of all things, that I am related to the Entenmann Bakery family. My gg Aunt (my Dad’s g Aunt/his Mom’s Aunt) was Laura Entenmann. She was born in Stuttgart, Germany where the bakery originated. In 2011 I was able to take a trip to Long Island where the bakery moved to (from Brooklyn). Sadly it had just closed by the time I got there. I did find out the Entenman’s Bakery was sold to the well known, multi-national, Bimbo Bread Bakery in 2002. Not sure if the recipes have changed any. I do like those chocolate glazed donuts of theirs, but try not to eat them to often, knowing they are unhealthy. They are great dipped in hot coffee🍩☕️
