Happy New Year to all of our red Ravine readers. When I was talking to my brother on Christmas Day, he said he was going to fire up the winter grill to make my sister-in-law’s luscious Sunshine Shrimp. She commented on ybonesy’s Tamales – A Christmas Tradition that she would send the recipe along to anyone who wanted to try it. Here it is!
I’m a big shrimp lover, and since I’m allergic to fish, tend to order shrimp whenever I get the craving for seafood (just ask Mom and Liz how many fresh shrimp I ate in Savannah and St. Simons last summer!). All this talk about shrimp led to memories of sunny days at the ocean, so I combed through the archives and landed on the beach at Ocean City, Maryland.
Liz and I joined my mother, sister, and her family there a few years back and had a great time boogie boarding and bodysurfing. (I won’t mention how many pounds of sand ended up my bathing suit when I wiped out!). It’s also the first time Liz met my family so she was very nervous. I’m happy to say, she passed with flying colors!
It’s 4 years later, New Year’s Day 2009 and we’re watching the 120th Annual Tournament of Roses parade and looking forward to more black-eyed peas for lunch. We slow-cooked them last night and ate them right up to midnight. How are you spending your New Year’s Day?

Sunshine Shrimp!
- 2 lbs medium sized shrimp (peeled & deveined)
- 2 lbs assorted fresh vegetables cut into 1 inch pieces (yellow squash, green squash, yellow & red bell peppers, red onion). You can also add mushrooms to the mix but J. & I don’t like them in this recipe.
- 1 medium sized can frozen orange juice concentrate that has been thawed
- 2 TBSP lemon juice
- 1 TBSP olive oil
- 2 tsp minced garlic or 2 cloves of garlic that have been pressed
- 1 tsp dry Dill Weed (or fresh) that has been finely chopped
- 1/2 tsp each salt & pepper
In a large storage bag, combine all ingredients. Shake well to coat thoroughly. Chill & marinate for 30 minutes.
Preheat grill & put ingredients on a small slotted grill pan. You can also thread these on a grill skewer if you don’t have a slotted pan.
Grill for 8-12 minutes until shrimp is opaque & vegetables are tender. This can also be done in the oven rack set to broil. Best if done on a grill, though!
Serve hot with white or long grain rice.
Thanks to alittlediddy for her Sunshine Shrimp recipe. Gratitude to all who read, comment, and visit red Ravine. I’m grateful for your presence here. And to my blog partner extraordinaire, ybonesy, I couldn’t do it without you! A very Happy New Year to you and your family and I look forward to another year in creative collaboration with you on red Ravine.
May your 2009 bring prosperity, love, and joy.

QM, the sand dragon is adorable!
I’m funny about shrimp. Right now I like them (they were so fresh when we ate them in Da Nang, Vietnam) but other times I don’t like the texture. Anyhow, given that I am liking shrimp these days, I definitely will give these a try (presuming I can get some good, fresh shrimp).
Happy new years, QM and all red Raviners! And thanks for sharing your recipe, diddy.

ybonesy, Happy New Year! Hope you are having a good day with your family in New Mexico. I love viewing the New Year’s parades and learning how all those flowers and seeds turn into floats. Wow!
I eat ANYTHING shrimp. Can’t get enough of it. Looking forward to trying diddy’s recipe.
BTW, we didn’t make these two sand sculptures but found them as we were walking down the beach one day. Ocean City is one of my favorite beaches. Though I did like the beach at St. Simon’s as well. But OC tends to be a great family beach. Lots happening there.
The sand castles we made with my niece that trip were a little less sophisticated because I’m more of a 2-D person. But that doesn’t keep me from trying! There are family members in the photos of the ones we made, so I’ll probably only release them to family on Flickr. Good memories though. I long for a hot day on the beach, making castles in the sand. Maybe a late winter vacation. Hope you have a relaxing day!

I found the recipe about 15 years ago. I hope folks try it. I used to love shrimp, especially steamed with Old Bay seasoning, but over the years I began to not care for it so much. But, this recipe is so good & healthy. It’s the only way I eat shrimp now! Thanks for sharing it with others, QM.
I love the sand sculptures! One summer at the Outer Banks in NC, a man made the most beautiful sculptures! A mermaid, shark, etc.. He was so talented! They were huge sculptures & he would spend an entire day on just one. Every day he would do something different!
The dragon is so cute! D

diddy, I’m definitely going to try it soon. I also thought it would be good to make on the grill when oliverowl comes this summer. We have put our grill away for the winter but now I wish we had kept it out on the deck!
I was so happy you sent the recipe. Thank you. I still need to forward Bob the chile recipe. I’ve gotten really behind on my emails but hope to catch up tomorrow! Sorry Bob! It’s coming.
diddy, these photos reminded me of the Outer Banks, too. I was thinking, it might be fun to go back to one of these oceans for a family gathering. I’d really like Mom to go, too, and Liz. Mom loves the ocean and I ran into a few photos of her reading Harry Potter at Ocean City that summer in 2005. Cute photographs.
Anyway, maybe something to think about for a time down the road. I feel most relaxed on a beach somewhere with my feet in the sand. 8)

diddy, what time does Penn State play in the Rose Bowl? Liz said Georgia and Clemson are also paying in football games today. (Uncle Bill went to Clemson.) Liz and I watched the Nittany Lions on a float today in the parade. Did you see it? There was also a float about New Mexico.

We grill 12 months a year too – if we only grilled when it was warm we’d never get enough. My favorite is to throw all the veggies I have on hand into a pan next to whatever is being grilled – instant meal. Yum!
The sand sculptures are really neat. Glad you got photos – all that work and it gets worn away by wind and waves.
We’re celebrating the New Year by sitting by the fire, reading, lounging around, listening to music – right now the Doobie Brothers are on. (I’m dating myself…)

Oh, I will always eat shrimp too. Yum Yum! I woke up and watched the parade too, then it was the hockey game and now it is some college football. The boy and I are still in our PJs and I will probably finish reading my book later. Might get dressed to grab some dinner. Might not. Love lazy days to start the year. Happy New Year!

Happy New Year, QM, to you, YBonesy and everyone at red Ravine.
We had our traditional New Year’s dinner last night since our youngest son and his fiancee were still here (they left early this morning to go back to Colorado). I inherited my husband’s Pennsylvania Dutch tradition of pork and sauerkraut. We made our own sauerkraut this year which I think made it all the more delicious and special. Each ingredient in the recipe we use has some symbolism or meaning for the new year.
I’m spending the day at home, mostly lazing around with football on in the background, occasionally doing something useful (such as unpacking from our recent trip or washing dishes). Tomorrow will be soon enough to get back to the usual.

Meant to add that Sunshine Shrimp is something I will be trying in 2009. It sounds delicious!
And the dragon sand sculpture is cute!
Note to Bo while I’m here: I was listening to the Doobie Brothers yesterday. Good driving music.

QM, I missed the NM float this morning. I forgot there are parades on New Years Day. What was the NM float like?
I just wanted to say, though, that I feel so happy that it’s 2009. Do you feel particularly light today, or is it just me? And it’s always so cool having a few days off before getting back into the routine. Like these days from New Years Day on are the most relaxing of the entire holiday.

diddy, the Lions are behind to USC. What’s going on? We’re going back and forth between that and some other shows. Chaco’s sleeping after we gave him fluids and dinner. Peaceful tonight.
Wanted to mention that temps got up in the 30’s today in Minnesota with wind chills bringing it down to about 19 degrees. Even with the wind whistling through the windows, a drastic difference between that and the rest of the week. Downright balmy.
Bo, the sand castles are kind of like sand mandalas — all that work only to be scooped aside with a brush. Kind of another of those lessons in impermanence. 8)
goddess, sounds like the perfect day. And some reading, too!
Robin, Happy New Year. The PA Dutch tradition is great, too. My sister in PA tends to combine the Northern and Southern traditions. Best of both worlds.
Oh, Bo, forgot to mention, I used to like the Doobie Brothers. Wonder what happened to them? I know the lead singer went on to a solo career. Kind of upbeat music. Now I want to hear them again.
ybonesy, the parade float for New Mexico was about the NM state bird, the roadrunner. It had Roadrunner, Wile E. Coyote and also a little about Route 66. All the floats were beautiful. Amazing process.
It’s good to get the fresh start of a New Year. I think fresh starts of any kind are required once in a while, just to keep our sanity. One day at a time, everything begins again.

I just want to take a moment to thank both QM and Ybonesy for the effort that goes into keeping this stellar blog up and running, always fresh, 24/7, and you’ve been doing it for over two years. Bravo! You are both an inspiration, for diligence, excellent writing, and fine photos.
I’ve spent the day playing with Photoshop to update some pics to post on Facebook and the 42 Days of Passionate Presence site (http://passionatepresence.ning.com). That group is about to kick off a 42 day adventure to join forces in realigning our own energies and the earth’s. Any and all are invited along for the cruise. The ship doesn’t pull out for a few more days. We’re all getting settled in our cabins and enjoying a big pre-departure party mood right now.
Blessings on your new year!

High fiver on the endless shrimpies QM…restaurant buffets fear me. What was the water temp while boogie boarding? And tell Liz, the first time I met my Husband’s parents, they kept calling me his ex-wife’s name. I feel I’m pretty even because my best friend’s Dad called him “Bill” for about 20 years. His name is Mike. 😉
Did ya see the big float with the skateboarding bulldog Tyson? He’s from my surftown and quite the celebrity. I should also clarify that stardom hasn’t gone to his head. It was already big like that…

QM, I lost interest in the game. USC is the better team & Penn State made a lot of mistakes. Oh well, win some, lose some. I don’t watch a lot of college football. But, when it comes to the NFL, I am a diehard Steeler fan. I won’t have company or go to anyone elses house to watch a game. It can be very intense for me! J thinks I’m more fun than the game! D

diddy, Liz wants to know how you feel about the Philadelphia Eagles who are playing the Minnesota Vikings this weekend? Are you routing for the Eagles? 8) Liz said if you are, she’ll get our little Philly Eagles blanket out (remember those from one Christmas?) and wave it around in the air.
Oh, wait, I just said to Liz, “But you’re routing for the Vikings right?” And she looked at me and smiled with a quesiton mark in her eyes and said, “Oh…I probably should.” 8)

QM, The Pictsweet frozen black-eyed peas & collard greens, with ham & skillet corn bread were quite good.
T & T shared Chocolate-Macadamia Nut Coffee they bought in Hawaii, to go with my Blonde Brownies…yum! After the noon meal, they wanted to see what was on my new HDTV
set. Fortunately, there was a PBS production of South Pacific, which was so good, Reba Macintyre (sp?) singing the part of Nellie. In the morning, while preparing dinner, I watched the Rose Parade, of course. Forever loyal to the Pacific football teams, I rooted for USC…my sarcastic sympathy to the Penn State fans, (Sorry diddy.)
Can’t wait to try Sunshine Shrimp, even though I don’t own a grill. Will try it in the oven. When I was a kid, and we got to choose our menu for our Birthday dinner, I always asked for shrimp! (I will hold QM to her promise to grill shrimp for me in August!)
Really enjoyed the photos of the sand art; between them and the views of Pasadena, I’m missing CA. You have to admit that 70 degrees sounds awfully nice, right?
Happy New Year, one & all!

Ha! I had to laugh at oo’s comment about the game! USC deserved to win. No offense taken oo, my dear friend, everyone has their team & I don’t begrudge them for that.
One thing I wanted to add about the recipe, it must be watched while grilling or broiling & turned every now & then. J loves mushrooms, but not in this recipe. I suppose if you are a big mushroom fan you could add some to the rice.
I don’t like mushrooms (they make me think of whale boogers-don’t know why, I don’t even know if whales have boogers!) I think it is the texture of them. I will eat mushroom caps stuffed with crab meat & drizzled with grated cheese, but that’s the only way! D

For the first time in decades I couldn’t find the Rose Parade on TV! I cannot remember a single year that did not begin with me watching the parade, either in person or on TV! When I lived in Glendale (for 24 years) we lived in the flight path of the stealth jet that does a fly over to begin the parade so we felt the shaking just before it went over head and then heard it after it passed over us, just as it was appearing on the parade route. That was a real wake up call, no need for an alarm!

ritergal, Happy New Year and thanks for much for the well-wishes. Much appreciated. And your 42-day cruise sounds amazing and holistic. How wonderful for you. I’ve never been on a cruise but got a calendar from Alaska from my Dad who went on a cruise there last year. He just loved it. How do people know they won’t get seasick? I’ve always wondered what people do when that happens.
diddy, I relayed the message to Liz but what’s the terrible towel? I should know the answer to that, I’m sure. But honestly, I don’t follow sports much anymore. Only for the playoff games. For some reason, I find those kind of fun.

heather, I read your comment to Liz and we were cracking up. The reason why is that on this very trip to Ocean City, my sister kept calling Liz by my ex-partner’s name. We all laughed, of course, because it’s a common thing that happens. So now, it’s a running joke between my sister and Liz. Just a few last week when I talked to her at Christmas, she said, “Oh, and tell Liz I didn’t call her G___ this time!”
It kind of reminds me how Mom’s and Dad’s with a lot of kids go through the whole list of names before landing on the right one. This especially seems to happen when they are mad at us for something. 8)

oliverowl, so glad your black eyed peas came out well. And the skillet cornbread. Did you make it with an iron skillet? It reminds me that the taste always come out a little like iron. Corina, I can’t believe that about the stealth plane flying over your neighborhood before the parade started. We did see it on TV and it made me wonder how that tradition got started.
diddy, I’m going to go back into the recipe post and add the part about turning them often. BTW, I don’t like the texture of mushrooms either so, yes, mushrooms = whale boogers. 8) I do like the flavor of mushroom though. Just not the things themselves. Is that strange?

QM, terrible towels were developed in the 70’s because of a sport announcer who announced at the games & on a local tv station. His name was Myron Cope. They are slightly smaller than a hand towel & are yellow with the wording in black. The wording is simply The Terrible Towel. Fans swing them through the air in appreciation of good plays by the Steelers. Mine is an original, although they are still sold today by the tons! I hope I don’t have to cry in mine any time soon! D

OH….diddy, I just read your explanation to Liz and she said, “Oh….it’s like our Minnesota Twins Homer Hanky!” The Homer Hanky was a small kerchief-sized towel to swing in the air for appreciation of the Twins one of the years they won the World Series. Well, winter has descended upon us again here in Minnesota. It’s -4 in my zip code at the warmest part of the day. Yesterday we came home from work to a broken water main on the road in front of our house! It was warm Thursday, in the 30’s, then cooled off really quickly to below zero. Most of our block had no water last night! It’s all fixed now.
Then our neighbor’s driveway got really slick and she slid into our yard. We had to go out in the frigid temps and push her big old SUV out of a snowbank last night. Wow! Lots going on in the neighborhood this weekend.
