mii familia, “mii” family, friends, and strangers we’ve set up on the Wii we got for Christmas, December 2008, photo © 2008 by ybonesy. All rights reserved.
Santa brought us a Nintendo Wii for Christmas. Yesterday we had a good time hanging out at the house and learning how the Wii works. One of the best parts about the Wii is setting up each player, which is called a mii.
When setting up your mii, you can choose head shape, eye shape, nose shape, color of eyes, hair, etc. You can add moles, make-up, eyewear.
I think Jim did a pretty good job of fashioning his mii after himself. See if you can figure out which one he is in the screen shot above.
(BTW, if you find Jim, move over to his right—your left—and that is the mii the girls created to represent me.)
What were some of your favorite gifts and/or moments from the holidays?
Ice skating, the day AFTER Christmas. The day itself was nice. Lots of family and food and frolicking. But the chance to gather the family in the van and unwind downtown served as the perfect rest stop in the middle of a busy time.
Enjoy your Wii.

Been painting my apartment. Even painted on Christmas day. Didn’t have much of a Christmas here. Been doing this project steadily since the 23rd. Tania had to take off for an family tragedy on Christmas day (see my blog for details).
I guess my favorite moment was seeing a flock of flamingos fly by when Tania and I were driving around early Christmas morning. I guess this painting project is a Christmas/anniversary gift for the two of us.
In the afternoon I did go to a Christmas dinner at my “Venezuelan” mom’s house. She is my former employer and I still work with her son. We drank and ate and visited from about 6:00 PM to nearly midnight. It was a good Christmas evening.
Lately I’ve been having “Christmas” in July when I am in the USA when I have all sorts of boxes waiting for me. Boxes of stuff that I have ordered over the year. I kind of went nuts in Oct./Nov. and bought all sorts of new bike parts online. Both mtn bikes will be getting new stuff! Cool! I bring surprises down for Tania when I return to VE.

Oh cute. We almost bought one but will probably do it for one of their birthdays instead……our Christmas money went on a puppy, even though she arrived at the beginning of December, so the boys had a booky, filmy, arts n craft Christmas. I was waiting for tears and tantrums over no really ‘cool’ gift (ie something electronic), but none came. Phew-ee.

Hi ybonesy, just checking in today. Sounds like your Holidays are going great with your family. Wonderful family fun with the Wii.
I’d say Jim has the long hair and beard. So that’s you in the green dress? Am I close!
I’ve only done Nintendo Wii once at R3’s with my nephew. You are right, one of the best parts is setting up your Mii. It’s kind of like that Simpsonize Me thing. It’s fun to try to get as close to how you think you look as you can. But you know, sometimes we look different to other people than we think we look ourselves. My nephew and I did Wii bowling and, I think, either baseball or tennis.
When I called home on Christmas, Mom said she was still in her nightgown and going fishing on her Wii. R3 said he helped her set it up and she’s having a blast with it. 8)
We saw this program this week on losing weight and a young kid was exercising by doing the Wii jogging thing in his living room. It really got his heartrate and breathing up, too. I’ve also seen the Wii used to retrain muscles after accidents or injuries. So many uses for the product. Amazing.

Ah, another family joins the Wii movement 🙂 We got ours in August for the young boy’s birthday and for Christmas we got Wii Fit and Rock Band 2. Even without Wii fit though we were getting quite active with just the basic Wii play and sports packets. I kind of think that the rather nice BMI reading I got when setting up my Wii fit was due to earlier rounds of tennis and boxing and bowling over the last 5 months!

It is amazingly physical—I was surprised. My sister and I did bowling and tennis last night. It was so fun. Up to then I had only watched the girls and Jim get everything set up and learn it. My girls are so good at everything; they’d been playing Guitar Hero at their cousins’, and we got that one game (the only one besides Sports, which came with the Wii). If anyone has good game suggestions, please let me know. My head is spinning with all the options out there.
QM, you’re right! I’m the one in the green dress. Interesting that they put glasses on me. I don’t wear glasses all the time, only for watching movies and driving. They must have known that since I went for an eye check-up on Christmas Eve, I ordered a pair of glasses that I can keep on all the time, with progressive bifocals. Yikes.
Cool that MOM got a Wii. I think my mom would like it, too. She’s pretty active.

A new puppy, jo?! How great is that? The thing about pets is that they are such a long-term commitment, and I think kids really get how big of a deal it is to get a dog that I can completely understand how that would be enough of a Christmas gift for your sons. (Plus the few extras—arts and crafts always are appreciated in our home.) 8)
MM, thanks for stopping in during your project. Wow, sounds like a good time to take on a painting job. Is Christmas not very celebrated in Venezuela?
You know, I was surprised at how big Christmas was in Saigon, Vietnam. I mean, lights and big displays everywhere downtown in District 1. It was really wild. And people gathered to watch models in shop windows play out all these roles, like princesses. In fact, there were a lot of themes that seemed to come from fairytales, like the pumpkin carriage and Cinderella. And huge Christmas trees made of lights on the sides of buildings. Anyway, it’s kind of fun to also just know that so many different festivities are happening this time of year all around the world.
Brian, iceskating sounds fabulous. I really like iceskating and anything that gets me up and out this time of year. Yesterday I mostly laid around and finished a novel. Today we went to see a movie at the theater. I think I’m ready for outdoor activity, although, man, at 11a this morning it was still only 30 degrees. Chilly.

Hey MM, I just checked out your blog. I hadn’t been since you were sick. Good for you for posting so regularly lately.
I’m really sorry to hear about Tania’s cousin. Please send her my condolences. What a horrible thing to happen Christmas morning.
The paint colors are great. I like the light one. A nice light tan. I love earthy colors. Also, the flamingos were fabulous. That streak of pink in the sky.
Seems like you’re serious about this project and getting it done. I’ll check back to see how it comes out.

yb, my favorite gifts are being with family & friends. We had our last Christmas celebration with J’s family just today. That’s where we do the white elephant gifts with the adults. So much fun! J picked a gift that was in a box. (I don’t trust the boxed gifts as there is a dirty sock that has made it to the second year. J picked his & opened it to see the worlds ugliest woman’s sweater vest. It is a holiday vest & very tacky! In fact it was our son E’s contribution that he wore to an ugly sweater contest & won! J put it on & because when your turn comes to pick a gift you are allowed to steal an opened gift from anyone & they get a chance to pick a new one. Of course he had no takers. I picked one that held two 5 lb. dumbells & R3 was kind enough to take it off my hands & the next gift I chose was a beautiful blue glass tree ornament. BTW, that dirty sock was also E’s contribution last year that was actually new, but he ripped holes in it & rubbed it in some dirt. Quite a character he is!
We all missed QM being there & thought of her often.
Oh, & the brother who’s home this was held, he & his wife got a WII for Christmas. Everyone was playing it! Have fun with yours! D

I’m quite partial to the one with the fangs…
Spent Christmas at my oldest niece’s house in Long beach. The kitchen is about the size of an elevator. I don’t cook (I believe you get that by now) so I always wash dishes. She even makes macaroni and cheese very exotic. Frowned at the Desert Rose china…dear god. She asked if I needed anything (I sit at the kids table naturally). I said “yes, a paper plate”.
I did try to leave with one of her chihuahua’s…after all…she does have 2 and I was taking the smaller one. ( It fit rather nicely inside my coat). Alas, she did a “Pepita” check and I had to do my first Christmas return ;(

diddy, I love playing the white elephant gift exchange! The dirty old sock sounds horrid and so perfect! It sounds like you guys mix “joke” gifts with nice (or “normal”) gifts, yes? That would be hard, then, if one picks an old sock—no one would certainly want to take that off your hands. 8)
The sweater vest sounds like something that can be recycled over the years—hang on to that one. Perhaps a future birthday gift for the nephew who put it into the white elephant? Also, I would have liked the 5-lb dumbbells. Good for arm exercises.
Our family did a white elephant one year, being as how we often do them at work and find them to be lots of fun. Well, for the family one we did pretty nice gifts. OMG, I thought we were going to end up in a family feud after that night. Never again will we do that! I’ll have to write about it in a post next Christmas, because it really did have us on the brink of a big argument. Live and learn.

Heather, you are such a kid! I bet with you sitting at their table, the kids are very content to stay put. (Whereas, they usually reach a point where they want to sit at the adult table…but not so as long as the funnest adult is sitting at the kid table.) 8)
Did you see the movie Chihuahuas? Is that what it was called? I took the girls to see it when it came out. Gives you a whole new appreciation for the little tiny things. Also, I tend to think my pug is a small dog, but man, she weighs so much more than a truly tiny dog! Even a poodle feels about as heavy as a potato chip next to my pug. But glad to know that Pepita was not dognapped over the holidays. 8)

yb, yes there is a mixture of good & bad gifts. Both J & I gave good gifts this year & those that picked them warned the other’s not to take them. Oh, we do have plans for the future of the sweater vest, though I can’t say, as other family members will be reading this post! R3 got the sock last year & added some fake blood at the top of the sock. We all got a chuckle out of that one! I said that next year when it returns, that I felt it should be framed.
J & I have a weight set, but with my back issues I am lucky if I can lift 1 lb. weights! Pathetic!
You will love your Wii. Mom loves hers, but did say it it quite a workout!
BTW, love your mini mii’s! Very cool! D

nah yb, I have enough trouble spelling Chihuahua let alone seeing the movie. I did see Valkyrie because I knew it would be a good, respectful, non-flapping audience…and they were 😉
I looked up the real facts and they stayed true to it. Uncanny how much Tom Cruise and the hero look alike.

diddy, sounds like ya’ll had a lot of fun at T & D’s this year. Wish I could have been there, too. Wii seems like the big hit this Christmas. Can’t believe how widespread they are now. Oh, how I missed the White Elephants. I love opening those and vying for the “best” gift. The dirty sock and the ugly sweater sound perfect for Elephants. I was there with you all in Spirit. 8)

yb – I picked your Mii out without even needing a clue. Your girls did a great job! I’ve never seen a Wii in action, though you do make it sound like fun. Glad you had a great Christmas.

I don’t have a wii, and it’s a good thing because it’s addictive!
Glad you stopped by my blog- how were the cookies you made? I haven’t tried that particular mix.

Hi Jen. Likewise, glad you stopped by. The cookies were a little on the sweet side for me but Jim loved them. I like only brown sugar; these ones had pre-added white sugar, I think. Our alfredo sauce was excellent, though. 8) Thanks for all the inspiration from your blog. I’m impressed by how much you cook!
Bo, the more I look at my mii, the more I think she looks like me. Jim, too, thinks she’s a spitting image. It’s so weird. It is really fun and, yes, addictive. I play bowling, tennis, and baseball, and these are from the one game that came with the wii. Yikes—what will happen when we start buying games?!
Heather, forgot about the speaking-during-movies thing. Yeah, any movie with kids is a danger zone. 8)

The only thing I ever did on my daughter’s Wii was set up my own mii. Then I didn’t even get to play! Hhm…me thinks it’s time to find my mii and go play!

ybonesy, did you get your hair cut this year? Is it really the length that it is in your Wii? I think I remember you mentioning that your hair is shorter now but I still have this image of you with longer hair. Hey, who are the other Wii-bles in your photograph?

Oh, definitely play it Corina. It’s so fun. And good exercise. My right arm has been sore from swinging the bat and from bowling. (Plus, now I want to go out and do real bowling. I think I’ve improved my game!) 8)
Yeah, QM, I got my hair cut in late fall, and then just got another cut a week or so ago. It’s chin length, a tad longer. I really like this length, even though I seem to go the opposite of everyone else (long in summer, shorter in winter).
The other miis are (and other than Jim’s, these were all created by the girls):
-Grand Hoba is behind me
-Em is next to Jim, and beside her is Grand Hobo (Hoba’s husband)
-not sure who all the ones are on the bottom row, although I believe one is Fart Sniff. (Dee is not pictured in this group.)
