November Frost Moon

appears in July
Note: Though I closely watched the Frost moon rise and fall throughout the month of November, she eluded my Canon. I never got a good shot of the November moon. Looking back through my archives, I decided to post these shots from the July Thunder Moon.
It was a beautiful summer night. I was walking across the 10th Street Bridge in Minneapolis with a couple of friends. We stood across from the I-35 bridge (still under construction) at the exact point where the middle was about to meet. When we turned around to walk back, the sun was setting; the Thunder Moon was rising in the East.
Many of the names for the November moon reference flowing rivers about to freeze over from the approaching cold. The Mississippi was warm on this July night, another winter yet to come. I am nearing the end of a year of posting these Moonwriting practices. One more — the December Solstice Moon is just around the corner.

Always love your photos QM. I love it when the moon is visible during daylight. The haiku, especially the first one, are remarkable. J witnessed the Jupiter, Venus, moon in the sky last night. He said it was just glorious. I missed it. I also missed your call on Thanksgiving day. Hope you & Liz had a great one! D

diddy, thank you. Jupiter, Venus, the two planets we are most likely to see. I love to imagine J. out watching the rise of the Moon. There is a connection between all of us moonwatchers out there.
Yes, I caught J. on the road with the call. It was unexpected but I was so happy to talk with him. We did have a good Thanksgiving. I feel like I have so much to be thankful for. As I mentioned in the Giving Thanks post (LINK), our dinner and baking didn’t quite come out the way we had planned! But it was wonderful just the same.
Mom said she had dinner with you all the weekend before. So happy that happened. Did she mention she had to get up and be at work at 4am on Black Friday? Ugh. It makes me cringe just thinking about it.

Great shots. I like the color of the setting sun on the clouds.

The moon in the photos was a good masquerade of the Frost Moon. In fact, the dark skyline against the bright blue sky, and that moon peaking out in the daylight—that’s how the Frost Moon made its appearance in these parts many a day. And the sky looked just like that. In fact, I felt cold just looking at the photo before reading the text. I really did think it was a cold frosty day.

QM, tonight is the big night for the alignment of Jupiter, Venus, & the Moon. It will be most visible tonight, so get that camera ready! By the way, I am going to be sending my Dads chili recipe to you to share with Bob. Probably in a Christmas card. D

ed, thank you. Glad you stopped by.
ybonesy, I’m so happy the July Thunder Moon did her job well, putting on the mask of the November Frost Moon. Maybe Thunder Moon is a shapeshifter. 8) There are some blue winter days here in Minnesota when the moon rides high in the sky. I think I got a similar shot to this one freezing day at the Art Shanty Projects.
diddy, wonderful. Will look forward to your Dad’s chile recipe. And will send it on to Bob. Is your Dad okay with you sharing it and “keeping it in the family?”
I’ll also look for the Venus/Jupiter/Moon happening in the sky tonight. I’m not up on it so thanks for sharing. I bet a lot of astrologers are making predictions about the day. So far the day in Minnesota is cold and clear, good moonwatching weather.

QM, hope you’re able to get some good shots. It’s overcast here, so I doubt I will be able to view it, though it is supposed to very visible to the naked eye.
Yes, My Dad is fine with me sharing the recipe. I think the scalloped oyster casserole sealed the deal! D

diddy, wonderful link on what’s happening with the Moon tonight. Thanks. I’ll see what kind of view we have from here. Keep in mind, I don’t have much of a telephoto lens on this point-and-shoot. I may have to enjoy it with the naked eye only! So far, clear and cold in Minneapolis. The sun is setting with a purple glow and it’s getting dark. 8)

diddy, OMG, I can see it in the night sky right now, rising over the oaks. It’s stunning! The Moon, Venus, and Jupiter!

Wow! Diddy and QM, please thank your dad for sharing the recipe. I will consider myself an honorary member of the family and not share it with anyone else without his permission. (Diddy thanks especially to you.)
QM, please take pictures of the event. The sky is cloudy here tonight as far as I can tell and I won’t be able to see the Moom, Venus and Jupiter.

Oh my, we noticed the two planets while down in Southern NM, where there’s little light pollution. It was so fun to watch them. I’ll make sure the girls see them now with the moon also in alignment. Thanks, diddy, for pointing that out.

p.s., we thought one of the planets was Mars because it seemed to have a reddish tint. Good to know what they really are.

QM & yb, you are most welcome! J saw the alignment tonight & said it was awesome. I tried viewing it from the back deck, front deck, & driveway. Although the sky is clear the mountain surrounding our home made it impossible.
Bob, thanks & I hope you enjoy the recipe as much as I do! D

diddy & Bob, I did manage to get a few pretty good shots. The sky was crystal clear but it was freezing outside. Liz got home from work about the time the Moon was rising. I enlisted her to set up the tripod and asked if we could take a few shots with her Canon. I forgot that she had a telephoto with hers so we were able to get closer than we would have with my camera, but not as close as a telephoto lens on a regular SLR.
It was really stunning to see it move across the sky. We got really chilled though. I’m not used to the cold yet! Bob, too bad it’s cloudy there in Kansas City. You’ve got the perfect camera and lens for those close-up shots.
ybonesy, so cool that you saw this down in southern New Mexico last weekend. I suspect you’ll be able to see the three for a few more days, though I don’t know for sure. It was about 5:30 EST when they started to rise. And I just checked outside (8:14pm) and I can’t see them anymore where I am.
BTW, I saw the reddish glow, too, but I think it was around Venus. There is something kind of magical about the night skies. I just love them, especially in the winter. Everything seems so much clearer.

I heard more about this alignment on the local news last night. They actually had a Minnesota shot of the 3 in a blue sky similar to the photograph in this post. But, you know, I liked the nightshots that Liz and I took because you could see the glow around the planets and the earthshine. They also said that it won’t happen again for another 44 years. If I last that long, I’ll be in the latter part of my 90’s. Glad I saw it last night. 8)

It made our local news, too, QM. It was a wonderful sight, amazingly clear. Can’t wait to see your photos. Hey, isn’t it going to be out for two or so more days. I wonder how it will look from Vietnam.

Yeah, even though this event supposedly peaked on Monday, December 1st in our side of the world, there’s usually a 3-day window (one on either side of the event) for sightings like this. Same way for Full Moons, Solstices, Equinoxes. So pay attention to your dreams from Sunday, Monday, Tuesday! It’s good to write them down.
It will be amazing to note what it looks like from Vietnam. Or if you can even see it at all. I plan to check out the sky tonight in Minnesota again and see what I can see. It was so clear, crisp and cold last night, perfect for viewing the December skies.
I did read that from Europe, Venus might be eclipsed, a whole other view. Maybe you can do a doodle of the night sky in Vietnam. A challenge with blues, blacks, shades of yellow, beige and white tones. You’ve got a long plane ride, lots of time to doodle if you so desire! I can imagine I’d take a long nap, write, or read. Oh, or maybe a few movies are in order. 8)

ybonesy, did you get a chance to view the moon this week in Vietnam? I wanted to come back to this post and check in on what I saw over the rest of the week.
Tuesday the sky was still clear and I could still see the triad but Venus and Jupiter had moved way, way West of the Moon and it would have been hard to get the three of them in one shot. It’s amazing how closely in sync Venus and Jupiter were though. They were about the same distance apart, even though they are moving in opposite directions from each other.
Wednesday it was partly cloudy. I could see the Moon and Venus but Jupiter was obscured.
Thursday, really quite cold out and clear. It was zero degrees this morning with the wind chill out where I live. Anyway, last night I could see the moon clearly, still with that beautiful earthshine going on. Did not see the two planets at all.
