You’ll love this, ybonesy, and you’ll never forget the common name of this flower, for the flower’s name is “pinks”. It’s also called a dianthus.
Was the color pink named after the flower pinks which is always a shade of pink, or was the flower named after the verb “pink” because its petals are fringed or “pinked”? Whoa – lots of “pinks” in that last sentence – does it make sense? 🙂

Bo’s comment is total!
It’s a ‘pink’.
Bet it’s a good smelling little flower, too. Maybe a hint of clove?

Wonderful photograph, ybonesy. I don’t remember seeing that flower here in Minnesota. Remember summer vacations as a kid? We never travelled that far from home. But I distinctly remember the feeling of being on vacation. Something freeing about it.
Bo, thanks for the name…pinks, really? I love how the edges are frayed, kind of like a sunburst. I knew you’d know the name of this flower!
leslie, if it smells like clove, I’d love to have some in my garden. The smell of clove is one of my favorites. Something clean and refreshing about it. Pinks!

That is one of the most beautiful flower pics I have ever seen – the intensity of the pink and the contrast of the edges with the pearly grey background. The essence of flowers is their transcience – yet the photograph holds them in our eye for fuller examination and feeling. This is Pink. It won’t ever fade.

lil, thanks. True pink, isn’t it? A color you can never forget. It is truly a beautiful photograph. And the way the background is grayish green and kind of monotone only adds to the beauty. Nicely done, yb.

Jackie, thank you for this link on the interview with Natalie! I’m out on the road and may not have a chance to check it out for a couple of days but I will definitely read it when I get a chance. Thanks again!

Hey, Bo, I headed out of town the morning right after I posted this.
Dianthus. I saw a photo of dianthus in my Flowers of the Southwest book, but the flowers in that one were red and white. I noticed the edges were the same, but I just couldn’t be sure. Thank you for letting me know.
Also, I named it Pink for the color only, as I didn’t even know the use of the term “pinking.” But isn’t that a cool coincidence!?
leslie, it was a good-smelling flower, although I don’t recall the clove. I’ll take a whiff next time I’m near it.
Thanks, lil and QM. Jim and I each took a ton of flower shots in the Pecos. The wildflowers were in full bloom. It was so cool. So, lots more flower shots to come.
Jackie, I’ll check that out this weekend. Gracias for letting us know.
