Maybe it’s the wind today. It’s a hair-raising wind. The kind of wind that would blow off a toupee or at the very least make the curly-headed among us look like we’ve been electrocuted.
Maybe it’s all the sickness around these days. Days spent in pajamas, stuffy head stuffed between pillows. Mega-bedhead.
Whatever it is, Hair is on my mind. Hair Brain. Hair Hair. Er, um. Hair we are.
Think about hair. It grows on your head, on your face, all over your body.
Or not.
How do you look at hair. Does it define you? Do you have curly hair or straight hair? Long, short, or a confused mullet? Do you wax your hair? Bleach it? Color it each month?
It always seemed to me that men wore their beards like they wear their neckties, for show. ~D.H. Lawrence
Violet will be a good color for hair at just about the same time that brunette becomes a good color for flowers. ~Fran Lebowitz
They say we always want the hair we don’t have.
How about you? Do you hate your hair or love it? What are your earliest hair memories?
Set your sights on locks, beards, strands, tresses, cowlicks, fuzz, frizz, wisps, dredlocks, curls, whiskers, thatches, mops, split ends, fros, hairy backs, hairy arms, no hair. Hair and now. For 15 minutes. Everything you know about it or want to say about it.
Get hairy with it. Be bald. Bare your hair. Wig out.
Now go.

YB, very entertaining post. (you got the blue lip thing going again!) Anhow, when I was in school we had to write about our biggest pet peeves in essay form for a social studies class. My pet peeve was hair on soap! I got an A on it, but was horrified when the teacher read it aloud to the entire class!
I prefer to keep my hair short. I am a brunette but have blonde highlights to “hide” the gray. Needless to say I am almost a blonde now!:) D

I am definitely going to do this topic… there are so many emotions tied up (so to speak) in our hair. Good choice.

Thanks for the Hair link, leslie. Can you believe, I’ve never seen the musical?
Hair on soap — ugh. I can deal with it at home, but I wish people wouldn’t leave their bars of soap in the gym. Strange hair stuck on a strange bar of soap in the gym shower — yucky….
Iggy Pop with a nose, wouldn’t you say, H? Re: Donald Trump combover — can’t he afford really good looking plugs, by golly? I mean, the combover is so low-tech.
Mom is better today, H. The procedure they did in emergency is holding. She doesn’t have an appt with the specialist until Feb 4, so I’m just hoping she doesn’t get another nose bleed before then.
pmousse — isn’t that the truth? I could go cut my hair tomorrow, short short, and the family would react. It’s not just one’s own emotions but all those associated with you, it seems.

ybonesy, this is such a great topic. And I love the drawing. When I quickly checked red Ravine before bed last night, I had the biggest smile when I saw your drawing! I had to call Liz over and we both just chucked out loud. It’s electric!
I have to say again how much I love when you post your doodles. They are so dynamic.

I should probably save this thought for the write, but I’ve known a few men who were obsessive about being hairless. It’s like there’s a percentage of people in the world who almost have a phobia about hair. Not just regular hygiene, but terrible discomfort if they had it anywhere on their body except their head. One even shaved his arms.

The day I got married, I went to get a hair cut in Ciudad Bolivar, Venezuela. The woman who cut my hair gave me white sidewalls and a flat top. I’d never had a haircut like that before. At first I was somewhat shocked because this was my wedding day. I didn’t need any more stress or nervousness. I looked at myself in the mirror, put on my sunglasses, and thought, “Cool! This is bad ass!” So ever since that day, I have worn my hair very short. What I have learned is, there are not too many people who can cut it correctly. I have found one favorite barber in downtown Puerto la Cruz (Venezuela) who does a good job. The other day, I had a guy give me a haircut in the open air market in El Tigre, Venezuela. It was a trippy place to get a haircut, like something out of National Geographic, but he did a good job. I like it.

Thanks, QM. This doodle was started on a plane ride. Another person who caught my attention. The quickly sketched her hair and then had to add a face (not hers) much later, as I had forgotten pretty much what hers looked like.
amuirin, I’ve honestly never met a hair phobic. I’ve met men who shave their legs for competitive bicycling. That strikes me as a bit of stretch, but it must make a difference, else why?
MM, the open air market haircut sounds refreshing!! And a bit exposed. I don’t really like getting my hair cut in front of any one but the person doing the cutting. I don’t even like the both of us looking at me in the mirror. Silly.

ybonesy – can relate to this topic, as am having severe bedhead, having spent the past two days flat out in bed. Not pretty what this does to us, eh? I have had a patchy relationship with hair, and my parents were obsessed with hair -theirs, ours, everyone’s. Will try to address this fun topic.
Hope you are starting to come out from under your flu! G

Loved the drawing.
Interesting thing about hair.
Growing up my Mother hated my hair. My hair is straight as a board and very fine.
A few years ago one of my children noticed something in some old pictures. My hair was VERY curly, especially as a toddler. I looked like Shirley Temple for god’s sake.
Well, the mystery was recently solved I found out that my Mother put perms in my hair when I was napping..can you imagine those old timey perms were awful!
In the late 60’s and 70’s when my straight hair was “in” she made me have body waves.
As an adult I have let it go natural so once again it is straight as a board. I wear it in a bob cut and I stopped coloring it a few years ago. I have a nautural gray silver streak in the front…sort of the Lily Munster look. Now people ask me where I had it done..hee, hee.
Wouldn’t you know it…after all the fights and tears over my hair…my Mother now loves it. There is one good thing about the whole ordeal..I blame her for everything wrong with my personality…it has to be brain damage from those perm chemicals! 🙂

gypsy-heart, I just read your comment (I was heading to bed but got distracted) – did your mother really put perms in your hair while you were sleeping? I just can’t believe that. AND that you didn’t wake up! 8)
BTW, I have one of those silver streaks, too, in the right front, but my hair’s pretty short. The last time I got my hair cut, I couldn’t believe all the salt and pepper in my lap. I kind of like it though. It’s the color gray my grandmother’s used to be. Silverish and shiny. 8)

Ybonesy- I like your artwork. If that’s just a “doodle” you are very talented! And I like the (almost) contrapuntal color. 🙂 (is that a word???)

Thanks, Sibyllae. I suppose it’s a bit more than a doodle 🙂 . Hmm, I don’t know if “contrapuntal” is a word, although I understand what you mean by using it.
QM, I can definitely believe that a child wouldn’t wake up even while someone was perming her hair. I’ve seen kids like this, who sleep so hard they could sleep through anything.
gypsy-heart, as someone with curly hair who longed for straight, I could NEVER understand the love affairs that certain people, especially of a certain generation, had with perms. Remember, even Mr. Brady on Brady Bunch had permed hair!! I think perms have come a long way from the frizzy look they seemed to invariably produce. But if I had straight hair, I’d wear it with pride.
G, the worst of the symptoms are gone, although I’ve woken up every morning this week with a sinus headache. Ugh. Re: your patchy relationship with hair, I think this is why the topic called to me. I suppose for some people, hair is neutral. But for many, hair through the years has left some impression on us.
