Snow Goddess, Minneapolis, Minnesota, taken Christmas Day, December 2007, photo © 2007 by SkyWire Alley. All rights reserved.
Dark when I left work,
then closing my eyes for sleep
the weatherman chimed,
“In the great Midwest
we’ve gained 8 minutes of light
since Winter Solstice.”
I love the blue and the black in this photo.

Funny, Jim just commented to Em this evening, “staying lighter later.” Those 8 minutes (and growing) make a difference. Beautiful shot. The poem a vignette.

Paul, thanks for stopping by. I’ll let Skywire know all the kudos from all of you on her photograph. I just love the tones. They are so winter.
Jackie, thanks for the tip on Natalie’s video. I just did a post on it. What a joy to help promote her new book. She read some excerpts from it to us while she was writing it last year. I think it’s one of her best yet. It’s great to have you stop by red Ravine.
C and ybonesy, glad you like the photo and little diddy of a poem. I’m always struck by the quality of light this time of year. And time as it relates to light.

I didn’t notice until I read your comments that this was Skywire’s photo. Wait to shoot, Skywire! It has a beautiful muted quality to it that fits with the snow, the cold, the flow of the figure — everything comes together in this photo.

diddy, you are one of our Biggest Fans. And I for one appreciate the depth and richness of your comments. How in the world did we get so lucky!
We’ve got a few other regular readers out there who comment often, and let me tell you, they make my day. It helps make this all worthwhile.
ybonesy, yes, it’s a Skywire original. You know what I love about this photo – the empty, negative space. I love it as much as the content. The color, too. She captured the light exactly as it was that night. Muted shades of blue.

Ditto diddy (that’s fun to say ; – ). I enjoy you so much!
QM — yes, the negative space reinforces the quiet and weight of the snow, the light, the cold. It almost takes my breath away to see the photo, like I’m right there breathing in that sharp cold.

Thanks gypsy-heart. That’s a good way to describe that photo — I feel like stepping into it, too. I’ll pass all this on to SkyWire who shot it.

you’re right, ybonesy, 8 minutes do make a difference. 8 more minutes of light!
I love photos that seem to me like a meeting between painting and photograph, between fantasy and realism. This one slips into that space.
