I Am Grateful For The Alphabet ;-)
January 2, 2008 by ybonesy
ybonesy, what a beautiful post. In every way. So visually pleasing. And I know you’ve been under the weather the last few days, but even so, it seems centered. Has a Zen haiku quality to it. Zest, zaniness, Zen everyday. I love the colors in the drawing. Is it one of your sketches?

Hi QM. Thanks. I do feel centered in spite of the cold. The antihistamines make me kind of spacey. If I don’t take them, I sneeze and drip. It’s a weird cold. The worst of the symptoms seem to be stretched over a lot more days than they were for either Dee or Em when they had the cold.
I liked the Gratitude writing practice and ABC exercise. I also did a 15-min piece, which I didn’t post.
The sketch. Yes, it just dawned on me that I haven’t released the photo on Flickr. It’s a sketch I did back when I was working in advertising. I wanted to make my own alphabet. Wouldn’t it be cool to design your own alphabet?

Yes, I bet that’s every graphic designer’s dream! I never thought about doing it myself. But I’ve always admired cool and unusual fonts (like the cool Dead History font in our masthead). Alphabets are a big part of writing (and printmaking), and the ability of writers to understand each other through translation.
Well, I think you’ve got a pretty cool alphabet started here. I like that you are digging through your old art. It’s inspiring, isn’t it?

ah, ybonesy, I see you released the image in Flickr. Pretty cool to click on your alphabet and see it in the larger sketch. The texture is great.

Ahhh, a post with a life of it’s own.
It seems to Mambo down the page.
I find I’m partial to you’re “X”…

I like the X, too, H. I like the color. Sort of a violet. A little more blue and it would be cornflower ; – ).
It’s fun to play with the HTML color chart.

Ybonesy – i wish the drawn sheet of alfabet were larger – i like the variety of font and especially how the colour and marks in the negative spaces plays within the plane of the surface. Wouldnt it be fun to use the pantone flip-chart to find the right hue and intensity for your gratitude list? It is so personal and meaningful one – you come across as a complex individual with a strong spiritual aspect, as well as one who revels in quotidian joys. 🙂 G

The thing I love about the blog medium is how fluid it is. Fast and fluid. I’d been bothered since this post went live by the smallness of the graphic — how it made everything too hard to see. So, given that both of you, QM and G, mentioned the size, I went ahead and replaced the first set of small graphics with one big one. I like it better.
G, I wished I had the colors in front of me in a medium that I could play with and that was real and in my hands when I was doing my gratitude list. I had to keep flipping to a different screen, and I couldn’t really tell if my colors were working out. I went with what came out the first round, but I would have loved one of those pantone flip charts.
Also, I just have to say that I adore the word “quotidian.” I didn’t learn it until I learned Spanish. The Spanish version is used, well, on a quotidian basis, whereas I hardly ever find a chance to use the word in English. Thanks for your comments. Very inspiring.

You wrote a gratitude poem. Very nice, as well as your artwork. How cool would it be to illustrate each word for a coffee table book on Gratitude, or even a little book, with pages for people to draw their own doodles and words. Just a thought. But this is an idea I could see you doing so well.

Fun idea, C. I once made a little book replica of the Runaway Bunny for my sister’s youngest daughter when she graduated from high school (or was it college?). Books are so fun to make. I have a graphic artist/artist friend who is a master bookmaker. I should take a class with her.
Thanks, leslie, TIV, MOM!
