I’ve been here before.
Said to live for hundreds of years.
Yet, you need agua to live, and where is theirs?
More beautiful in mythology than in person.
Although, the new Rental Car Center is like a museum.
I wonder if Dumbledore knows where I am (was).

Ok, I’ll bite. Were you in Las Vegas, NV?

The palm trees look inviting.

Nope, not Las Vegas.

This is a fun post. Love the shots from your trip. As to where you were…hmmm. The palm trees…looks like Florida but no water, so that’s not a fit. I have no idea. I’ll wait to hear other guesses. In the meantime, I’m positive Dumbledore is turned in. 8)

Oh, duh. The pheonix lives hundreds of years! That doesn’t speak well for all those years of Jesuit college. I didn’t know they had a new rental car center out there. I love the carpet. Nice job with your cell phone camera.

Not only is she artistic, she is logical!
Yeah, I like the carpet in the Sky Harbor airport. You should see the new rental car center. It’s giant.

Way too elegant for Las Vegas!

Phoenix elegant? Wow, that says a lot about Las Vegas ; – ).

Ah, the Great Phoenix, rising from the ashes! I’ve never been to the Phoenix airport. I’ve only driven by Phoenix on my way to other Southwest destinations. I have a friend who is moving to Tucson soon. I have no idea if it’s even close. But I might see more of Arizona in the future. 8)

Have you noticed that Arizona has two cities whose names you have to spell out twice — is it “oe” or “eo” and “sc” or “cs”??

Yes, exactly! I definitely have to do that. And until I went to New Mexico so many times last year, I also had to do that with Albuquerque. Now I’ve got it down! At least I think I do…

I’ve only been to Las Vegas once. And it was on my way to California from Montana. I was young and scrunched into the back of a white Datsun wagon with 5 other women in the front and back seats. It was a long drive across the desert.
Everything else I know about Las Vegas comes from watching the original CSI. That’s scary, isn’t it?

I’ve only been once, too. I was about 17, I want to say. I’ll have to check with my dad. I flew to California (my first time on a plane) and then rode back in the car with Mom and Dad. They loved to gamble, so we stopped in Vegas for a few days on the way back to NM.
Dad and I went to a show with showgirls wearing pasties. I remember thinking that the people at our packed table probably thought I was Dad’s date.
On another night I won at one of the slot machines and then had to say it was Mom’s win because I was underage.
My parents have been to Las Vegas probably about 50 times, at least. I’ve only been that once, although I have thought recently about taking the girls one weekend and riding the roller coaster that sits on top of a high-rise building.

We stopped and did the slots on that trip I mention in Comment 12. Otherwise, I’ve never gambled there. But I have watched a documentary on how Las Vegas began, complete with footage of all the old buildings and neon. It was fascinating. I understand they’ve torn a lot of them down now. It sounds kind of like the Mall of America these days.

CSI is filmed in Los Angeles. The thing to know about Las Vegas is that nothing is old. Whenever a building becomes a little worn, we implode it and start over. Also, we have most places in the world here: Venice, Paris, Egypt, Monte Carlo, Montelago, New York and Planet Hollywood. It’s all only an inch deep and just as sincere.

Phoenix…garden spot! Spent a few days in the Phoenix area in July. Steiner gave me a free ticket to RUSH, so we rendezvoused at the Cricket Pavilion. The next morning headed up to Black Canyon City for a couple of days of mtn biking. Even spend an afternoon in Cleater, AZ at a dusty bar drinking Pabst Blue Ribbon. I gave the bar an 8 out of 10 because someone stepped on the dog and it gave a yelp.
I’m always blown away how different Arizona is to New Mexico; culturally, politically, and geographically, even though they are next door to each other.

Franny — I’ve only been to Las Vegas once and I remember it exactly as you’ve described it. I remember being so amazed at the crowds of tourists taking mass quantities of photos of the “fake-itecture”…as if those were the real Roman ruins…
I also remember taking a walk just beyond the “strip.” Things were really degraded and there was lots of puke on the sidewalk. It seemed like the “real” Las Vegas, or a least what’s underneath that inch-deep exterior.

Frannie, Los Angeles?! I feel like the guys in the Pace picante sauce commercial (LINK).
Hmmm. Nothing is old. Sounds like Las Vegas is a place that keeps reinventing itself on the surface. For some reason, that has a wide appeal in this country. How did you end up there from Carmel, California?
LikeLike
Let’s see. I was in Carmel for four years because my father lost his drivers license (as in suspended) and he wanted to drive so he bought a theatre and a gay bar and we lived there til I graduated and he got his license back. But I’m really from Nevada City in the mountains in Northern California which I returned to after Law School and practicing a few years in Indiana where I got thrown out for having too much enthusiasm but not enough skill and I wound up in Reno and then Las Vegas for the last 23 years….that’s the story.

After you finish your novel, please, please start your memoirs. You really do have an intriguing life, the kind that always makes me want to say, But why this?, or And then what?
mm — ain’t that the truth about NM and AZ. They’re so different, but probably not nearly as different as NM and TX on the other side ; – ).

ybonesy,
Isn’t New Mexico the best in the West?? Just my humble biased opinion.

Let’s not forget what makes Vegas fun. Elvis himself walked me down the aisle when I married my dear Bill almost 9 years ago at Graceland (Chapel). He was wearing a black rhinestone studded jumpsuit and playing “Love Me Tender” on the guitar. Elvis, not Bill.
