Rein Nomm is an artist who works with water-soluble dyes and raw egg to create a visual feast of color. I saw a poster on his Flickr site for an upcoming show in Plymouth, Michigan. You can check out his Flickr profile at nomm de photo.
His photographs are best viewed in their original size. And be sure to stop by the Plymouth Community Arts Council Gallery if you are going to be in Michigan over the next month.
If Michigan doesn’t fall into the geographic latitude/longitude of your part of the world, Flickr might be the next best thing to being there.

QM: thanks for doing a post on Nomm. His works evoke earth images and Italian paper marbling and cosmos… They remind me of all these, yet they are their own creations, each one.
Flickr is a huge community; I don’t know that I would ever run into the same members as you do, and so I hope you keep posting on red Ravine info about folks whose works you admire. You have good taste ; – ).

Thanks, ybonesy. I was blown away by his work. And I can picture him brewing the dyes, water, and egg, then taking the perfect shot. The community in Flickr is diverse and talented. I will keep posting snippets as I see them.

P.S. – Wish you were closer. We’d take a drive over to Michigan and then maybe hit Milwaukee on the long way home to see Martin. 8)

As Ybonesy knows, I am currently reading a book about Chaos. I don’t know much about this science (why I am reading about it) but when you put food coloring into water (or some other liquid) it has always been intriguing to me. I use it often in the classroom for various demonstrations. I know I am the most curious person in the room in watching the dye swirl and change shape. Always entertaining. Too bad MN is so far away from NM.

These images remind me of an art form I have been following for years called Fractal art. It originally started as graphical representations of mathematical formulas and has evolved into an art for. Here are some links to see what this art type is all about –

I used to use these images as my desktop image and would change them monthly.
This too reminded me of the paper marbling we used to do with water, oil and food coloring. This was one craft my kids really loved.
Thanks for bring forth another form of art to your forum.

Thanks for stopping by, Joe. Glad you checked out the art.
R3, I remember fractals. One of my artist friends was really into them when she was in art school. It was right before the computer exploded into graphic design. Well, right around that time. It’s hard to imagine life when computers and the Internet were not around.
I wonder if you and your kids would still like to do the marbling together? It still sounds like fun to me. I bet their creations would be so different at different ages. Fun to think about.
