Wow, I love this drawing. The textures are outstanding. And it looks like I could reach right into it and touch the sweater.

Interesting drawing…brings up many things.
Breakfast was always my favorite time with my dad. We liked places like Beto’s (where ever that is). Mom and Pop places made the best breakfasts. One of my favorites was a place in northern California somewhere south of Mt. Shasta heading to Tahoe. I was 15 years old and my dad and I were on a Steinbeck-like (Travels with Charlie) road trip. I still remember the place. It was called the “Golden Bear”, a log-cabin looking place. The sign was classic Everyday Art; hand painted sheetmetal bear (two sides with yellow neon swirly eyes and blue neon outlining the shape of the bear. Anyway I had some HUGE pancakes with eggs and ate it all. My dad was impressed. He said, “They say travel is expanding…but I think you are expanding your stomach more.” That was the best road trip ever!

I’ve always wanted to go try and find it. I think it is somewhere near Lassen Nat. Park because I think we drove to the park after breakfast. Someday I’ll try to retrace the route.

Your dad’s saying is funny, about how traveling expands one’s stomach. I think breakfast is my favorite meal when I’m on a roadtrip. I think of all the times Jim and I would go to Durango or some other Colorado or northern NM town and get breakfast at some little diner or bakery. And the other thing, pancakes always taste better on roadtrips. At home they seem to sweet and heavy, but on roadtrips they’re just the right heaviness. Why is that??

You’re so right, ybonesy. Breakfast, pancakes, grits, all taste better on roadtrips. Mom and I stopped at the Waffle House in the South on the way home and it was so good that day. They have the best grits! Pancakes the same way. Much better when you eat them out.

Thanks, sam. I use PIGMA MICRON, usually pt. 01 made by Sakura in Japan. You can get them at most hobby stores and art stores. They come in different colors. I have thicker tip sizes, too, but I like the super tiny ones. I could even get into something smaller if I could find one.

Random thoughts this image provoked –
Supertramp’s “Breakfast in America” running through my head.
My daughter loving the time alone with me in the morning at a good breakfast resturant.
Breakfast on Sunday morning – Pancakes, eggs, bacon, sausage, grits, toast – Good childhood memories I have shared with my kids.
Dad eating a stack of pancakes with “dippy eggs” in between each pancake. He also liked scrapple.
The Spot – a local hot dog place in downtown Harrisburg where the counter people look like this man who stack hotdogs up their arms so they can add the extra’s of chili, relish, etc.

ybonesy — This is lovely. I know you mostly as a writer, so I’m just enthralled to see your visual art talent, and it really seems like you are a. enjoying it and b. coming into your own as an artist. I’m picturing a gallery with all of your work on the walls and lots of people milling around admiring it. Good wine, good hors d’oeuvres, good thoughts.

R3–glad you’re back! Scrapple? Scrambled eggs and apples??? My sister-in-law and brother-in-law have always big on the Saturday or Sunday morning breakfast-at-a-diner with their kids. It’s a great ritual.

Thanks, Carolyn. Yes, I am loving it, and yes, something is shifting. I’d love to do enough paintings for a gallery. And include the doodles, too. I’m working on it, little by little.

For me it is palatable when served warm with maple syrup. Otherwise, I will stick with grits with lots of butter, crumbled bacon and maybe some sharp cheddar cheese.

I’m real sorry I missed this event yesterday!!
I’m very glad R3 and Quoinmonkey remember their breakfast events. Those were the days!!! I could never learn to like dippy eggs or scrapple but I sure cooked a lot.
My favorite was scrambled eggs and cheese. Also grits with butter and cheese and sometimes bacon or canadain bacon.
I still have them almost ever morning along with a cup of coffee. Old habits are hard to break and a breakfast like that keeps you from getting hungry for 5 or 6 hours.

Amelia, you made the greatest breakfasts! How could we forget? And when I was home a month or so ago, you made scrambled eggs and grits almost every morning, a real treat for me. You’re right – a good breakfast has staying power!
