The Mighty Rio Is Where I’m From
May 18, 2007 by ybonesy
I spent much of today on planes and in airports trying to get back home from a short trip. I was in transit longer than the time I spent at my destination.
It was dark and bumpy flying into Albuquerque tonight, but it gave me peace of mind knowing el Rio Grande was below me. (The photo is from last week’s daytime flight.)

I LOVE this photo. Oddly, rivers can be very grounding. Remember our summer swim last year in Taos?

ybonesy,
When I fly from Venezuela back to El Paso, I am always amazed in how fast we can get from one place to another. My prefered route is now with Continental that flies into Houston, where I clear customs then on to El Paso.
The flight across the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico can be interesting. I am sure I saw whales in the sea (I think the Pacific Ocean at that point) the one time when I was flying into Panama City via Copa Airlines, (then on to Houston).
When flying over Texas, as beautiful as the rivers and greenery are from the air, I starting getting happy around Midland/Odessa where the land starts drying out and turns brown. Approaching El Paso, the oil exploration/drill roads of west Texas, and then finally the Franklin Mountains that are my landmark that I am almost there. I can even see Cooke’s Peak (about 30 miles SE of Silver City) when we are on final approach.

I know what you mean, mm. So many times I’ve overheard people when they see the New Mexico landscape say, “Ugh, it’s so brown…” and I’m thinking, “Beauty, pure beauty.” (I guess they could say the same thing about the Rio Grande, and I’d think the same thing.)
QM, by the way, I was too tired last night to catch your question, but yes, I remember swimming in the rio outside Taos, floating down with the current. That was bliss!

I was shocked at how cold it was when we dove in. I couldn’t tell if it was coming out of silence that way or just me. It was very refreshing, floating, looking up at the steep cliffs. I enjoyed swimming at Ghost Ranch, too. That was totally magical.

Yes. You’ll have to write about the goldfish in the yellow pond. That was magical.
