This week’s topic is in honor of Steve Almond’s most wonderful book, Candyfreak: A Journey Through the Chocolate Underbelly of America.
What sweets did you eat as a child? Watermelon sticks? Bubble Yum?
Were you a hot tamale in your twenties? Or perhaps a big hunk.
Do you sometimes feel like a nut?
Write about sugar, sugar. It can be a 10- or 15-minute practice, confectionary haiku, a list of things you like about sweetmeat, a short essay, an ode to jawbreakers–anything you like. It’s all dandy. Just don’t sugarcoat.
y, confectionary haiku! i’m all over that!

Peanut M&Ms! I loved those as a kid! Probably why I got so fat.
Now a days it is “mentitas”; small, hard round mints from Chile. The come in a resealable foil pouch. I love them! I found out the hard way one day that the energy in one mentita is good for 10 minutes of paddling my kayak. Luckily I had enough to get me back to shore on a 7-mile open water crossing.

For those of us who sometimes need a little reminder, here’s a page that has lots of candy from back in the day: oldtimecandy.com
We had a store called “The Sweet Shop” and Great Aunt Margaret would give us kids some change to buy candy after Sunday school to keep us occupied until the regular church service was over. Yummy. I loved going to church.

There were phases.
I really liked peanut butter cups, but they were gone so fast and I was trying to get maximum value for my coinage, so I didn’t get them often.
For a while Butterfingers were the favorite.
Charleston Chews and Junior Mints, at the movies.
And now, when I want a chocolate fix at my desk: peanut M&Ms.

Yes, I’ve gone through phases, too. (And, yes, I do remember chicken legs. Is that what they were called?)
It’s come full circle, though. I started with fruity candy, and now I’m back at fruity candy after having loved chocolate/peanut/carmel combos. And I still like sunflower seeds, although it’s not terribly elegant to eat them, like I do, in one’s cubicle.

Is there any candy besides Twizzlers? I think not. The strawberry is pretty good, but cherry-flavored pull-and-peel can keep me happy for miles on a road trip. Unhappily, it is hard to find. So when I do, I never bother with things like resisting or dieting.

I swear on The Bible I am not trying to take the wind out of your sail, but aren’t Twizzlers made with horse hooves :0 ??

You’re thinking of Jello!…Jello! is made out of horse hooves. Twizzlers (on the other hand) are made from wheat grown in the heartland, strawberries ripened on the West Coast, cherries harvested from lovingly tended orchards, sugar hand-picked from sugar cane family farms…that sort of thing. I think the proof is in every bite.

You should become a Twizzlers ad copy writer! I’m going out and buying a big bag for the family.
