This drawing’s got pizazz! My mother had beautiful feet and legs. She often wore high heels when I was growing up and looked beautiful in them. I could not stand being uncomfortable in shoes or clothes and never knew how she did it.
I noitice that women wear much lower heels these days unless they are heading out on the town. But they do still wear them. Whey do women love high heels so much?

Because high heels give us height. That’s why I love them anyway. I have a lovely pair of pink leather shoes I bought in a boutique shoestore in Union Square. They were originally $200, on sale half off. They look like a pair of ballerina slippers in shoe form. Flat, flat. So comfortable. Italian. Gorgeous leather that ages beautifully over time. I took them to India and wore nothing but them. And yet, as much as I love them I often pass them over for a shoe that gives me height. Vanity. That’s why.

Why is height something that is desired? What’s wrong with being short?

Height = Power ??

ybonesy,
Venezuelan women would love your shoes. They are really into shoes. It seems most stores at the malls are shoe stores or cell phone stores. Phones and shoes, shoes and phones.
I recently had to go with my wife to find some shoes. “Do you like these?” She would ask, or “I am looking for something sort of like this,” pointing to a square-toed loafer-like thing, “but without the heel.”
Most Venezuelan women’s shoes have heels, so finding a flat shoe is somewhat of a challenge. We finally found some Brazilian shoes in a tiny shoe store at a small shopping center near downtown PLC. Brazilians must have big feet because their sizes run large, and did you know that Brazil has their own shoe sizing categorization? I didn’t know that, but now I do. European, UK, USA, and now Brazilian.

mm,
Why do you think most Venezuelan women’s shoes have heels? Is your take on it similar to ybonesy’s, that height = power for women?
I’m curious about this because I’ve never even thought about it. I dress for comfort. And it doesn’t matter to me how tall the people around me are. I notice if someone is towering over me. But otherwise, not much at all.
And I do notice that women that tend to be naturally tall (without heels) are sometimes seen as outcasts, not as having more power. It doesn’t really make sense to me.

It’s a funny one, this height stuff. When I was in high school, height did seem to have some honor. At graduation, we marched in gender mixed pairs, starting with the shortest.
When I moved to university I saw that height had very little to do with position.
When we are sitting down, we are all the same height. When you are in bed, height is irrelevant.
And still, there is some perception of a tall man being sexy and a lot of men find something quite enchanting about tall women.

High heels make a woman feel sexy, that’s why we put up with the pain. I loved to wear high heels until I was sixty, then I decided my feet were more important. Don’t get me wrong I still like to feel sexy, I just don’t feel I need the heels to do it.
I realize you can exude sexiness just as well by the way you carry yourself and respond to another!! The shoes were more a crutch for my own ego.
But I would still love to wear them if they would make them to fit my feetcomfortablely. They would make a great weapon though ,especially the stilettos. Ha,Ha!

I’m glad platform shoes have made a comeback. They are somewhat easier on the feet. They can make a great weapon, too.

Thanks, Amelia for putting it out there straight!
I bet there isn’t a man or woman, gay or straight, out there who doesn’t look at this picture and feel a flutter.
The weapon stuff, maybe that’s the real power.

Jeanne, I don’t know about platform shoes. Wasn’t there some story about a woman in Japan who fell off her platforms and died?

Sex is (somewhat) open and an important part of Venezuelan culture and Amelia hit it on the head, high heels are all about sex (and power…but isn’t sex a weapon too?).

Good point, MM.
Yes, Amelia, it is about feeling/being sexy. Today I’m wearing black pencil leg slacks, a black/multicolor flower print tunic, and I’d love to dress it up with heels. But alas, I’m just going to work–so I’ll wear my Dansko slip-on boots or clogs.

Too late, although I am wearing my pink ballerina slipper-like shoes. No heels but at least color.
