Don’t know about Slams, no, not my cup of tea. But poetry has got it going on this week in Minnesota. As I write, Where One Voice Ends Another Begins: 150 Years of Minnesota Poetry is happening at the Mill City Museum down by the Mississippi. Featured poets, Robert Bly, Bill Holm, Michael Dennis Browne, Deborah Keenan, Heid Erdrich, Wang Ping, and Angela Shannon will read their work, along with other participating poets.

This Saturday is Women Stand Up! at Bryant Lake Bowl on Lake Street in Minneapolis. Check it out. You’ll see Improv, Stand-up, sketch comedy, poetry and a bit of everything in between. The Bryant Lake Bowl venue is worth the trip. I think I bowled a 153 last time I was there! Why spend April 14th sweating over taxes. Wouldn’t you rather be supporting the local poets?

homesick for rest
a sandhill crane feeds
on a crawfish bottom

I offer a warm place
staring through a hole
in a dark Nebraska blind

soles wet with February frost
smashing feathers as I walk
dry on the backstep

dirty brown slip covers
of ancient river mud
leave me hungry for sentiment

startled chestnut leaf
crinkles against the sky

somewhere frozen there
is my heart
