I got a short, one page letter in the mail on Wonder Woman stationery from someone in last year’s Taos writing Intensive that inspired me to scour the world for Wonder Woman quotes.
It made me wonder if they actually remembered that writing practice I read about carrying the Golden Lasso of Truth through Missoula, Montana on Halloween, 1975, dressed in powder blue, unribbed long underwear, navy wrist bracelets, a fire red breast plate, and yellow domed headgear.
Or do they just love Wonder Woman as much as I do?
Here are the best quotes I found from DC comic books and the 1975 television series The New Original Wonder Woman with Lynda Carter. I also found The Wonder Woman Pages to be an incredible archive of information.
I’m reminded that TV, screen, and comic book scribes are writers, too.
Tawanda!
[Oh, wait, that was Fried Green Tomatoes, one of my favorite films of all time. And, yes, I’ve even eaten them!]

And, finally, my personal favorite:
” A new journey to be started.
A new promise to be fulfilled.
A new page to be written.
Go forth unto this waiting world with pen in hand, all you young scribes,
the open book awaits.
Be creative.
Be adventurous.
Be original.
And above all else, be young.

Use it wisely.”

I bet the person remembered your Wonder Woman costume and the piece you wrote about it and read in the zendo. I remember it!

This is sooo late, and just a tad off-topic, but I talked to my two best off-line guy friends, tonight. They’re raising a child together. She’s two years old, and this year, for Halloween, one of them made her a Wonder Woman costume; which, of course, made me think of both this post and “Taking Back Our Girls”.
Sorry for rambling. Just feeling a little bit proud of them, right now.
P.S. Her costume doesn’t include long underwear… 😉

sam, your P.S. cracks me up. I had forgotten all about this post referencing that Wonder Woman Halloween costume with the long underwear I wore back in Montana one year. (Some days I wish I had a Golden Lasso of Truth!)
Wow, a 2-year-old Wonder Woman! I *am* impressed. Think of how incredible she’s going to be when she’s 18. Sounds like your friends are raising her right. 8)

Imagine my surprise when Liz and I turned on Bones (LINK) last night (a Fox TV show loosely based on the works of real-life forensic anthropologist Kathy Reichs, who produces the show) and saw Dr. Temperance “Bones” Brennan dressed in a Wonder Woman costume! I nearly fell off my chair!
The costume was great. Though I think the actress who plays Bones, Emily Deschanel, is a bit too thin for my taste. What’s great about the show is the chemistry between Bones and F.B.I. Special Agent Seeley Booth (portrayed by David Boreanaz). A lot of the scenes are just of them bantering back and forth in the car (and his fear of clowns) but they crack me up.
Anyway, Wonder Woman lives on! Dr. Camille Saroyan, the big boss, wore the Catwoman costume. Sexy, yes. But Wonder Woman reigns!

I also want to mention that Bones was mentioned in a more serious context in Comment 28 (LINK) on the Take Back Our Girls! post. There are strong and brainy women in Bones and also the same old, same old, stereotypes, as mariacristina points out in her comment. (You also can see the high heels Bones was probably running in at the link in Comment 4 of this post!)

I caught that episode of Bones Tuesday night, too! Loved the bit where she decided to spin around while Angel (sorry, the name is sticking) wasn’t looking.

Sam, the ending was the best part of the episode! When she spun around like Wonder Woman and then clinked her bulletproof bracelets together! And Booth goes, “What are you doing?!” Liz and I had to rewind and replay it a few times! We were cracking up. Ah, you have to love popular culture. The only thing I missed was her roping in some criminal with the Golden Lasso of Truth.

I like that quote, too. It’s from one of the Wonder Woman comic books. At least according to the source I used when I wrote this. It was from #167. You might find more if you explore the links. Thanks for stopping by.

Princess Diana (who EARNED the right as the winner of an island-wide tournament to be known as WONDER WOMAN not only on Earth, but far beyond) was more than a PR figure…although what she has to say about peace, love, forgiveness, the rewards of a life of service, etc., are important enough for me to discuss in a college classroom. I recall teaching my “little (10 years younger sister) to “remember the power within you’ [before she took & passed the Bar Exam] and that “any woman can be a wonder woman if she recognizes the full power of women” (ca 1940s, so dated). She was a very successful Sex Crimes prosecutor and Bureau Chief (10 years – 94% conviction rate, fighting as WW does for women and children) and is now an equally successful member of the Defense Bar.

A great tribute to Wonder Woman, Joseph. She has been a powerful force in many women’s lives over the years. It sounds like your sister was one of them and quite an amazing woman herself. How great that you teach the virtues of Wonder Woman in your college classes. I am currently reading The Secret History Of Wonder Woman by Jill Lepore. It’s a fascinating read for anyone who wants to dig into Wonder Woman’s roots and the history of her creator. Wonder Woman was created in 1941 by William Moulton Marston. He was the inventor of the lie detector test and led quite the unconventional family life. One of the women he loved was the niece of Margaret Sanger, one of the most influential feminist of the 20th century. Highly recommend!
