I love the skeleton!
YB — This is COOL…love the moon rising and the vibrant colors. What kind of pens did you use to draw it? I’m struck by the zillions of lines used to do the excellent shading. Do you draw the outlines of the picture first and then color it in? Of course, what is NOT colored in this vibrant picture is eqally striking. I am curious about the red line that the human and the skeleton are ready to cross in opposite directions…so many questions…
Thanks for this drawing. Happy November!
Fantastic midnight drawing, yb. I agree with bp, great use of negative space in the drawing. How many Trick-or-Treaters did you get at your place? And I wondered if you could talk a little from your perspective about the history of Day of the Dead. I know it’s a bit different than Halloween. It’s coming up in a few days, right?
Liz and I watched a scary movie called Shocker! while we were handing out candy to the Trick-or-Treaters. Then later, in the middle of the night, I woke up and heard a thumping noise and nearly jumped out of my skin. It sounded like a pumpkin smashing. So we had to get up, tiptoe into the living room, and look out the window at the deck to make sure our 3 pumpkins were still there. All was secure!
Oh, wow, ybonesy! I LOVE this! The green guy reminds me of Lorne from Angel the Series.
Gracias! I use my trusty SAKURA PIGMA MICRON 01 pens, which I have in five colors. I need more colors, and my blue ran out because the top fell off sometime recently and dried out much of the ink.
I wanted to post a Halloween-slash-Day-of-the-Dead doodle, and I started this one on the plane ride from Portland, which is about 2 hours long. The drawing turned out to be more than I should have bit off, because it took me about three more hours last night after trick-or-treating to finish it. And even then, I want to go in and add much more depth.
The red line, breathepeace, is a road. It turned out that the man and the skeleton ended up going in opposite directions. I think I subconsciously do that kind of balancing in my pieces without really understanding why, except for the desire to have balance.
Oye, QM, el Jim stayed home to tend to the trick-or-treaters, while the girls and I met up with a whole group of friends and their kids at our old neighborhood. We were about 15 folks riding in a haywagon pulled by a tractor, and we hit two streets. In our community, the houses are on lots of land, and so there are only a couple of places you can go to and actually get to the houses to trick-or-treat.
Jim set up a little graveyard with tombstones, a Frankenstein pumpkin that rocks, and a hanging ghost out in the driveway — a sign that we were ready for goblins. Not a one showed, so now we have all our candy we bought, plus two huge sacks that the girls got last night. Whew! We’re in candy heaven.
Day of the Dead starts today — Nov 1 & 2.
I go to an annual Day of the Dead celebration that we hold in an historic home that’s now a museum. It has the old cemetery, and we create an ofrenda (a shrine where you give offerings of candy and food and flowers and other things).
The living bring gifts to the dead in the cemeteries and light candles and stay with the dead through the night. Many people are out in the cemetery (now I’m talking about the celebration in general, not our celebration that we’ll be holding on Saturday). It’s a big deal in countries like Mexico, or even the Philippines, which has similar roots.
Here’s one link that talks about the history:

I’m sure there are great sites out there, which I’ll try to grab later in the day.
QM, how did your Halloween go?? What did you and Liz do?
I want to go! Wish we had a celebration here. Naw, wish I were in Mexico.
We’ll make a little altar here, though.
Awesome picture, ybonesy. I love Frankie’s face.
I love this ybonesy! Perfect for the day.
Tonight I will light candles for all friends and family and other souls instrumental in making my life rich or poor who have passed on. It has been a clear and sunny day, and promises to be a clear night for viewing the night sky.
O love this drawing – it is harmonious. G
You are a very wonderful and unique artist. Your joy in the work so clearly comes through in every squiggle.
yb, I’m a little late responding to your question (Comment 7), but Liz and I watched a movie between handing out shakes of candy to an abundance of little ghosts, goblins, grim reapers, and princesses. We even had one kid who was a lawyer on Halloween which seemed so apropos in some strange way.
Liz also bought me Halloween flowers, a bouquet of purple and orange flowers, in an orange vase with a little bobble head Pumpkin woman made by a craftsperson in Wisconsin. She said we were celebrating hanging in there and doing the next right thing, sticking to it, showing up big time. I was so touched. I felt grateful.
As far as the veil being thin this week, our neighbor, Herb, died a few weeks ago. He was in his 90′s. But now every time we look out the window over to his house, it feels like we can see him there. And every night, the lights come on in his house and turn off in the morning. Probably on a timer. But still..it’s an eerie feeling. We’ve been talking about how we can still feel him around.
The Halloween bokey (don’t you like that spelling?) sounds fun. You’ll have to post a picture of it.
Bobble head — that’s a good turkey name, btw.
Spooky about Herb’s lights coming on and off. What if it’s NOT a timer??? Oooooooooo…
Hey, I just updated this doodle. I worked on it some more last night. You can still see the old one on my Flickr account, but I added a lot more shading to “Lorne’s” face. (Thanks, sam, for naming him.)
So cool! I want to print out this picture, and save it for next halloween.
yb, I remembered that I wanted to comment on your extra detail and texture in the drawing. It adds a depth to Lorne. And it looks like more detail in the white areas – the moon and Mr. Bones. Or maybe it’s just me.
Excellent Thumb Placement!
