I scroll by this drawing every day. And every day, I stop and stare at the details. I’ve been wanting to comment. So I thought I’d go ahead and do it.
I was thinking about that comment Word made in one of your first shoe drawings – I Walk, Therefore I Am - remember when he made a reference to platform shoes and the story about a woman in Japan who fell off her platforms and died? Well, are these considered platforms?
Or are platforms high only in the back? The other thing I think about when I look at this drawing is the size of the woman compared to the thin straps that wrap around her ankles from the shoes. I like the juxtaposition.
That’s it for now. I’m sure I’ll stop by here again.
Yeah, I guess these are kind of like platform shoes, but mild ones. I’ve never actually seen shoes like the ones in the drawing–they’re a cross between sandals, espadrilles (the tying part, and btw, interesting history of espadrilles in the link), and platform shoes.
Which now just jogged my memory–one of my sisters used to wear Dr. Scholls shoes (the original ones with wood sole and leather strap), and then one of my first boyfriends also wore the shoe, which was the first time I’d ever seen a Dr. Scholl on a man. But that made him all the more interesting to me. Dr. Scholl’s are like a platform shoe without the height (which doesn’t make much sense, but there you have it).
I’m confused. I think yall are missing the point of the painting itself. It’s art, beauty, mystery, etc. And yall are focused on the damn shoes. I know the title is a bit misleading. Just because the shoes are in the title doesn’t mean that that’s all there is to the painting. Stop for a moment and take a deeper look.
Well, yah, we got a little into the technicalities of the shoes. But yes, when I painted this I had in mind a series of “situations” where individuals — men and women — aren’t interested in taking off their shoes.
